Abstract

A wound dressing defining skin facing areas having different degrees of skin adherence. The dressing comprises a backing layer defining a center portion and a border portion surrounding the center portion. A carrier layer is secured to the border portion of the backing layer within the border portion and includes a first skin adherent facing layer. An absorbent core is connected to a surface of the backing layer within the center portion and a second skin adherent facing layer is disposed along a surface of the absorbent core. The first facing layer has greater skin adhesive properties than the second facing layer.

Claims (32)

1. A wound dressing having bodyside and backside surfaces, the wound dressing comprising:

a flexible and continuous backing layer having first and second surfaces, and defining center and border portions, the backing layer second surface continuously extending so as to define the backside surface of the wound dressing;

a flexible and continuous carrier layer having first and second surfaces, the second surface of the carrier layer entirely thermal bonded to the first surface of the backing layer border portion, the carrier layer defining an opening generally corresponding to the center portion of the backing layer, the carrier layer being stiffer than the backing layer;

a first skin adherent silicone-based facing layer directly bonded to the first surface of the carrier layer and having an uninterrupted thickness, the first facing layer defining the border portion of the bodyside surface of the wound dressing;

an absorbent core having first and second surfaces, the second surface of the absorbent core connected to the first surface of the backing layer at only the center portion thereof such that the carrier layer is contiguous with peripheral edge portions of the absorbent core; and

a second skin adherent silicone-based facing layer directly bonded to the absorbent core, the first facing layer having greater skin adherence properties than the second facing layer, the first and second skin adherent facing layers are co-planar and continuously form the bodyside surface of the wound dressing.

2. The wound dressing according to claim 1 , wherein the carrier layer is sealingly thermal bonded to the backing layer.

3. The wound dressing according to claim 1 , wherein the second facing layer comprises a discrete layer of silicone-based material having a plurality of preformed apertures arranged in a pattern and an uninterrupted thickness, the apertures are substantially uniformly spaced from one another and generally have a uniform shape and size.

4. The wound dressing according to claim 1 , wherein the backing layer seals the peripheral edge portions of the absorbent core located near and along an interface between the border and central portions of the backing layer.

5. The wound dressing according to claim 1 , wherein the backing layer is liquid impervious and moisture permeable.

6. The wound dressing according to claim 1 , wherein the carrier layer is liquid impervious and moisture permeable.

7. The wound dressing according to claim 1 , wherein the carrier layer has peripheral edges that are coextensive with peripheral edges of the backing layer.

8. A wound dressing having bodyside and backside surfaces, the wound dressing comprising:

a flexible and continuous backing layer having first and second surfaces, and defining center and border portions, the backing layer second surface continuously extending so as to define the backside surface of the wound dressing, the backing layer being liquid impervious and moisture permeable;

a flexible and continuous carrier layer having first and second surfaces, the second surface of the carrier layer directly thermal bonded to the first surface of the border portion of the backing layer, the carrier layer defining an opening generally corresponding to the center portion of the backing layer, the carrier layer being stiffer than the backing layer, the carrier layer being a liquid impervious, moisture permeable polymeric film; and

a first skin adherent silicone-based facing layer directly bonded to the first surface of the carrier layer and having an uninterrupted thickness, the first facing layer defining the border portion of the bodyside surface of the wound dressing;

an absorbent core connected to the first surface of the backing layer, along the center portion thereof;

a second skin silicone-based adherent facing layer connected to the absorbent core and only corresponding to the center portion thereof, the first facing layer having greater skin adherence properties than the second facing layer, the second facing layer defining a plurality of preformed apertures generally uniformly shaped and arranged in a uniform pattern.

9. The wound dressing according to claim 8 , wherein the first and second skin adherent facing layers are co-planar and form the entirety of the bodyside surface of the wound dressing.

10. The wound dressing according to claim 9 , wherein the second facing layer comprises a discrete layer of silicone-based material having a plurality of preformed apertures arranged in a pattern connecting the bodyside surface of the wound dressing to the first surface of the backing layer.

11. The wound dressing according to claim 10 , wherein the apertures of the second facing layer are generally uniformly spaced from one another and have substantially a uniform shape and size.

12. The wound dressing according to claim 8 , wherein the carrier layer has peripheral edges that are coextensive with peripheral edges of the backing layer.

13. A wound dressing having bodyside and backside surfaces, the wound dressing comprising:

a flexible and continuous backing layer having first and second surfaces, and defining center and border portions, the backing layer second surface continuously extending so as to define the backside surface of the wound dressing;

a flexible and continuous carrier layer having first and second surfaces, the second surface of the carrier layer thermal bonded to the first surface of the backing layer border portion, the carrier layer defining an opening generally corresponding to the center portion of the backing layer, the carrier layer being stiffer than the backing layer;

a first skin adherent silicone-based facing layer directly bonded to the first surface of the carrier layer and having an uninterrupted thickness, the first facing layer only defining a border portion of the bodyside surface of the wound dressing;

an absorbent core having first and second surfaces, the second surface of the absorbent core connected to the first surface of the backing layer at only the center portion thereof such that the carrier layer is contiguous with peripheral edge portions of the absorbent core; and

a second skin adherent facing layer directly bonded to the absorbent core, the first facing layer having greater skin adherence properties than the second facing layer, the first and second skin adherent facing layers forming the bodyside surface of the wound dressing, the second facing layer being a discrete layer of silicone-based material having a plurality of preformed apertures arranged in a uniform pattern and an uninterrupted thickness so as to connect the bodyside surface of the wound dressing to the first surface of the backing layer.

14. The wound dressing according to claim 13 , wherein the carrier layer is a liquid impervious, moisture permeable polymeric film.

15. The wound dressing according to claim 13 , wherein the backing layer is a liquid impervious, moisture permeable polymeric film.

16. The wound dressing according to claim 13 , wherein the apertures of the second facing layer are generally uniformly spaced from one another and generally have a uniform shape and size.

17. The wound dressing according to claim 13 , wherein the carrier layer has peripheral edges that are coextensive with peripheral edges of the backing layer.
