Tissue opening occluder
A tissue opening occluder comprising first and second occluder portions, each occluder portion including a frame structure and an attachment structure to attach one portion to the other portion. The frames may be utilized to constrain the tissue between the two portions enough to restrict the significant passage of blood therethrough. The frame portions may be covered by a fabric suspended from a perimeter thereof. The occluder portions are conjoined at least one point on each portion.
1. A method of occluding an opening between overlapping atrial septa of a patent foramen ovale (PFO), the overlapping atrial septa forming a PFO tunnel, comprising:
deploying a tissue opening occluder comprising a support structure within the PFO tunnel between the overlapping atrial septa; and
engaging an anchor element carried by the support structure with heart tissue from within the PFO tunnel once the support structure is positioned in the PFO tunnel, the anchor element piercing heart tissue from within the PFO tunnel to secure the occluder in position within the PFO tunnel.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anchor element pierces and passes through heart tissue once the support structure is positioned in the PFO tunnel.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue opening occluder further comprises a fabric supported by the support structure, and the fabric promotes tissue growth to permanently anchor the occluder in intimate contact with a tissue wall.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the support structure is received and retained exclusively within the PFO tunnel.
