Abstract

A method is performed by a deployment unit for an electronic weapon. The method includes describing the apparatus to a launch device of the weapon; and propelling the electrode in response to the launch device. The electrode conducts a current through a provided target to impede locomotion by the target.

Claims (76)

1. A deployment unit for an electronic weapon, the deployment unit comprising:

an indicator that provides to a launch device of the weapon indicia describing the deployment unit whereby the indicia is available to affect a function of the weapon;

an electrode; and

a propellant that propels the electrode in response to the launch device, the electrode for conducting a current through a provided target to impede locomotion by the target.

2. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein a position of the indicator serves as at least part of the indicia.

3. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia describe a capability of the deployment unit.

4. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia describe a range of the electrode.

5. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia describe a manufacturer of the deployment unit.

6. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia describe a model identifier of the deployment unit.

7. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia describe a date of manufacture of the deployment unit.

8. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia describe a serial number.

9. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia describe an incapability of the deployment unit.

10. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia describe an identification of the deployment unit.

11. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia describe an aspect of installation of the deployment unit with respect to the launch device.

12. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia describe an installation orientation of the deployment unit.

13. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein:

the deployment unit further comprises a plurality of sets of electrodes, each set for a respective common launch, whereby the deployment unit provides a plurality of uses with the weapon prior to removal of the deployment unit from the weapon; and

the indicia indicate that the deployment unit is capable of a plurality of uses.

14. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein:

the deployment unit further comprises a plurality of sets of electrodes, each set for a respective common launch, whereby the deployment unit provides a plurality of uses with the weapon prior to removal of the deployment unit from the weapon; and

the indicia indicate a respective range for each set.

15. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein:

a. the indicator comprises an impedance; and

b. the indicia are provided in accordance with the impedance.

16. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein:

the indicator comprises a magnetic permeability; and

the indicia are provided in accordance with the magnetic permeability.

17. The deployment unit of claim 16 wherein a position of the magnetic permeability serves as at least part of the indicia.

18. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein:

the indicator comprises a source of magnetic flux; and

the indicia are provided in accordance with the magnetic flux.

19. The deployment unit of claim 18 wherein a position of the source of magnetic flux serves as at least part of the indicia.

20. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein:

the indicator comprises a light reflectance; and

the indicia are provided in accordance with the light reflectance.

21. The deployment unit of claim 20 wherein a position of the light reflectance serves as at least part of the indicia.

22. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein:

the indicator comprises a memory; and

the indicia are provided in accordance with data stored in the memory.

23. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicator comprises an antenna for communicating in accordance with the indicia.

24. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia are conveyed by an electrical property of a radio frequency signal.

25. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein:

the indicator comprises a resonant circuit; and

the indicia are provided in accordance with an electrical property of the resonant circuit.

26. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia are conveyed by an electric charge.

27. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia are conveyed by an electric field.

28. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia are conveyed by a radiation.

29. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia are conveyed via an electric circuit.

30. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia are conveyed via a magnetic circuit.

31. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia are conveyed via an optical circuit.

32. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia comprise an index value for use with a table.

33. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia comprise an encoded value.

34. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia are conveyed at least in part by a polarity of an electrical or magnetic property.

35. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia are conveyed via parallel channels of one technology.

36. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia are conveyed via parallel channels of a plurality of technologies.

37. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia comprise a quantity of available uses of the deployment unit.

38. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia comprise whether the deployment unit is ready for use.

39. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia comprise a range of a next use of the deployment unit.

40. The deployment unit of claim 1 wherein the indicia describe a launch device compatibility of the deployment unit.

41. An apparatus for deploying an electrode for a provided electronic weapon, the apparatus comprising:

a. means for describing the apparatus to a launch device of the weapon whereby a result of describing is-available to affect a function of the weapon; and

b. means for propelling the electrode in response to the launch device, the electrode for conducting a current through a provided target to impede locomotion by the target.

42. The apparatus of claim 41 wherein the means for describing comprises:

a. means for description; and

b. means for providing indicia of the description.

43. The apparatus of claim 42 wherein the indicia of description comprises a description of a capability of the apparatus.

44. The apparatus of claim 42 wherein the indicia of description comprises a description of an identification of the apparatus.

45. The apparatus of claim 42 wherein the indicia of description comprises a description of an aspect of installation of the apparatus with respect to the launch device.

46. The apparatus of claim 41 wherein the means for providing comprises means for communicating with the launch device in response to receiving a signal from the launch device.

47. A method performed by a deployment unit for an electronic weapon, the method comprising:

providing, in accordance with an impedance, indicia of a description of the deployment unit to a launch device of the weapon whereby the indicia are available to affect a function of the weapon; and

propelling an electrode of the deployment unit in response to the launch device, the electrode for conducting a current through a provided target to impede locomotion by the target.

48. The method of claim 47 wherein providing indicia further comprises providing indicia of a capability of the deployment unit.

49. The method of claim 47 wherein providing indicia further comprises providing indicia of an identification of the deployment unit.

50. The method of claim 47 wherein providing indicia further comprises providing indicia of an aspect of installation of the deployment unit with respect to the launch device.

51. The method of claim 47 wherein providing comprises communicating with the launch device in response to a signal received from the launch device.
