Abstract

A multicast service of a 3GPP Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is disclosed. A multicast service stream identifier is provided so that each multicast area can receive different information for one service or one multicast service can be provided with different QoSs to areas. In addition, the multicast service stream identifier is provided which can selectively receive diverse menus or channels for one multicast service provided in the same area. Thus, by providing the multicast service stream identifier, users' desires for various services can be satisfied.

Claims (27)

1. A method of providing an MBMS (multimedia broadcast/multicast service) service comprising:

attaching an MBMS service ID to MBMS data; and

transmitting the MBMS data and the MBMS service ID to a mobile terminal, wherein the MBMS service ID is used to distinguish between MBMS services.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

attaching an additional identifier to the MBMS data.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the MBMS service ID is represented by an access point number or by an Internet Protocol (IP) address.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the additional identifier comprises at least one of a multicast group ID, a multicast area ID and a UDP/TCP port number.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the additional identifier is configured to provide different information to each of a plurality of service areas or groups from a particular MBMS service.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the additional identifier is configured such that one MBMS service is capable of providing different quality of service characteristics to each of a plurality of service areas or groups.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

prior to attaching the MBMS service ID to MBMS data, classifying at least one of service data, multicast areas, multicast groups, and radio network controllers (RNCs).

8. A method of receiving a MBMS (multimedia Broadcast/multicast service) service comprising:

receiving MBMS data and an MBMS service ID attached thereto;

reading the MBMS service ID, wherein the MBMS service ID distinguishes the MBMS service from other MBMS services; and

processing the MBMS data in accordance with the MBMS service.

9. The method of claim 8 further comprising:

receiving an additional identifier attached to the MBMS data.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the MBMS service ID is represented by an access point number or by an Internet Protocol (IP) address.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the additional identifier comprises at least one of a multicast group ID, a multicast area ID and a UDP/TCP port number.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the attached additional identifier is configured such that each of a plurality of service areas or groups is able receive different information from a particular MBMS service.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the attached additional identifier is configured such that one MBMS service is capable of providing different quality of service characteristics to a plurality of service areas or groups.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the additional identifier is configured to allow a terminal belonging to a specific group or a specific area to selectively receive the MBMS data transmitted from the network.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MBMS service ID is related to channels for the MBMS services.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the attaching and transmitting steps are performed in a UTRAN.

17. The method of claim 2 , wherein the additional identifier is configured to allow the mobile terminal to process the MBMS service data according to one of a plurality of different multicast areas or quality of service (QoS) requirements.

18. The method of claim 8 , wherein the MBMS service ID is related to channels for the MBMS services.

19. The method of claim 8 , wherein the MBMS service data is processed according to one of a plurality of different multicast areas or quality of service (QoS) requirements.
