Abstract

A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates sandwiching a liquid crystal layer of positive dielectric anisotropy; a first polarizer adjacent the first substrate, with a first gap between the first polarizer and the first substrate; and a second polarizer adjacent the second substrate, with a second gap between the second polarizer and the second substrate. At least one of the first and second gaps includes an optically biaxial retardation film. The first and second polarizers are disposed such that optical absorption axes of the two polarizers cross each other perpendicularly. An in-plane retardation axis of the retardation film is oriented generally perpendicular with the optical absorption axis of the polarizer that is disposed at the same side of the retardation film with regard to the liquid crystal layer.

Claims (14)

1. A liquid crystal display device, comprising:

a first substrate and a second substrate sandwiching a liquid crystal layer therebetween;

a first polarizer disposed adjacent to said first substrate at a side opposite to a side of said first substrate facing said liquid crystal layer, with a first gap between said first polarizer and said first substrate;

a second polarizer disposed adjacent to said second substrate at a side opposite to a side of said second substrate facing said liquid crystal layer, with a second gap between said second polarizer and said second substrate;

at least one of said first and second gaps including therein an optically biaxial retardation film,

said liquid crystal layer comprising a liquid crystal having a positive dielectric anisotropy in such a manner that molecules of said liquid crystal are aligned generally perpendicularly to said first and second substrates in a state in which an external electric field is not applied,

said first polarizer and said second polarizer being disposed such that an optical absorption axis of said first polarizer and an optical absorption axis of said second polarizer cross with each other perpendicularly,

an in-plane retardation axis of said retardation film being oriented generally perpendicular with said optical absorption axis of the polarizer that is disposed at the same side of the retardation film with regard to said liquid crystal layer.

2. The liquid crystal display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein there is provided at least a first electrode on a first principal surface of said first substrate facing said second substrate, and there are provided a plurality of second electrodes on a first principle surface of said second substrate facing said first substrate.

3. The liquid crystal display device as claimed in claim 2 , wherein said first electrode is provided between at least two of said second electrodes.

4. The liquid crystal display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said liquid crystal layer has a retardation of 80 nm or larger but not exceeding 400 nm.

5. The liquid crystal display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said optically biaxial retardation film has an in-plane retardation of 120 nm or less.

6. The liquid crystal display device as claimed in claim 5 , wherein said in-plane retardation of said optically biaxial retardation film is equal to or larger than 20 nm but does not exceed 60 nm.

7. The liquid crystal display device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said retardation of said optically biaxial retardation film in a thickness direction thereof is equal to or smaller than a retardation of said liquid crystal layer.
