Abstract

In a mailing system for franking a postage indicium serving as a proof of postage, postal data including the postage needs to be communicated through such an indicium. Illustratively, the postal data is categorized into (a) invariable postal data, e.g, a device ID identifying the mailing system, which is unaffected by a franking transaction, and (b) variable postal data, e.g., the postage, which may change from one franking transaction to another. To avoid latency of the franking operation, the invariable postal data is preset for initial printing of the postage indicium, and the variable postal data is determined and set for printing in real time. In printing the postage indicium, the invariable postal data and the variable postal data are presented in that order in one or more symbols.

Claims (30)

1. A method for printing a postage indicium, comprising:

prior to receiving a request to print the postage indicium:

determining a predicted value of variable postal data; and

precomputing a code to authenticate the postage indicium based on the predicted value of variable postal data;

after receiving the request to print the postage indicium:

determining an actual value of the variable postal data for a piece of mail; and

comparing the predicted value to the actual value;

if the actual value matches the predicted value, then printing the postage indicium based on the precomputed code; and

if the actual value does not match the predicted value, then computing a code to authenticate the postage indicium based on the actual value of the variable postal data and printing the postage indicium based on the computed code for the actual value.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising computing the code for the actual value based on a portion of computation results generated when computing the code for the predicted value.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein precomputing comprises computing the code based on a digital signature algorithm.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the predicted value of the variable postal data includes statistically determining the predicted value of the variable postal data.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the predicted value of the variable postal data is based on an actual value of the variable postal data from an immediately prior franking transaction.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predicted value of the variable postal data comprises a postage value.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predicted value of the variable postal data comprises a class of mail.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising calculating a portion of the postage indicium based upon invariable postal data prior to receiving the request to print the postage indicium.

9. A mailing system to print a postage indicium, comprising:

a postal security device configured to precompute a code to authenticate the postage indicium based on a predicted value of variable postal data element prior to receiving a request to print the postage indicium;

a processor configured to determine an actual value of the variable postal data element for a piece of mail, and compare the predicted value to the actual value; and

a printer that prints the postage indicium based on the precomputed code if the actual value matches the predicted value,

wherein, if the actual value does not match the predicted value, then the postal security device computes a code to authenticate the postage indicium based on the actual value of the variable postal data and the printer prints the postage indicium based on the computed code for the actual value.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the postal security device computes the code for the actual value based on a portion of computation results generated when computing the code for the predicted value.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the postal security device computes the precomputed code based on a digital signature algorithm.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor statistically determines the predicted value of the variable postal data.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor determines the predicted value of the variable postal data based on an actual value of the variable postal data from an immediately prior franking transaction.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the predicted value of the variable postal data comprises a postage value.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the predicted value of the variable postal data comprises a class of mail.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor calculates a portion of the postage indicium based upon invariable postal data prior to receiving the request to print the postage indicium.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predicted value is determined prior to detecting a mail class of the piece of mail.

18. The system of claim 9 , wherein the predicted value is determined prior to detecting a mail class of the piece of mail.
