Abstract

A method of encoding image data, and an apparatus to perform the method, the method including repeating a process of dividing a block into sub-blocks based on an average value of pixels of the sub-blocks; creating map information of the sub-blocks; determining a mode for generating bit streams according to a number of the sub-blocks; and generating bit streams of the determined mode, map information, and representative pixel values of the block or the sub-blocks.

Claims (23)

1. An image data decoding method comprising:

decoding a bit stream of a mode for generating bit streams according to a number of sub-blocks of a block;

decoding bit streams of map information of the sub-blocks; and

decoding bit streams of each representative pixel value of the block or sub-blocks,

wherein the mode is determined in advance corresponding to the number of sub-blocks divided from the block.

2. The image data decoding method of claim 1 , further comprising:

compensating for spatially predicted pixel values of the decoded block, or temporally predicted pixel values of the decoded block, after the decoding of the bit streams of the map information and representative pixel values.

3. The image data decoding method of claim 2 , further comprising:

decoding an encoded RGB signal before compensating for the spatially or temporally predicted pixel values.

4. An image data decoding apparatus comprising:

a mode decoding unit to decode a bit stream of a mode for generating bit streams according to a number of sub-blocks of a block;

a map information decoding unit to decode bit streams of map information of the sub-blocks; and

a representative pixel value decoding unit to decode bit streams of each representative pixel value of the block or sub-blocks,

wherein the mode is determined in advance corresponding to the number of sub-blocks divided from the block.

5. The image data decoding apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising:

a temporal/spatial prediction compensating unit to compensate for spatially predicted pixel values of the decoded block, or temporally predicted pixel values of the decoded block.

6. The image data decoding apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising:

an RGB signal decoding unit to decode an encoded RGB signal.

7. At least one non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that control at least one processor to perform a method of decoding image data, the method comprising:

decoding a bit stream of a mode for generating bit streams according to a number of sub-blocks of a block;

decoding bit streams of map information of the sub-blocks; and

decoding bit streams of each representative pixel value of the block or sub-blocks,

wherein the mode is determined in advance corresponding to the number of sub-blocks divided from the block.
