Abstract

A catheter assembly allowing for non-contaminated insertion of the catheter into the urinary canal. The catheter assembly includes a urinary catheter, a catheter package and a sealing member. The urinary catheter defines a conduit and has a proximal end adapted for insertion into the urinary canal and an opposite distal end. The catheter package has a hose with a cavity for accommodation of the catheter, and a catheter outlet adapted to dismantle the proximal end of the catheter from the catheter package. The sealing member is adapted to provide a substantially liquid-tight seal between the catheter package and the urinary catheter while the catheter is being dismantled.

Claims (18)

1. A compact extensible catheter assembly comprising:

a urinary catheter having a proximal end adapted for insertion into the urinary canal of an individual and an opposite distal end;

a catheter package having a generally tubular body with a cavity for accommodation of an entirety of the catheter in an enclosed configuration and, in a proximal end thereof, a catheter outlet through which the proximal end of the catheter can be projected from the catheter package and a drainage outlet disposed proximate a distal end of the tubular body, the distal end of the urinary catheter is separable away from the distal end of tubular body to open a drain opening in the drainage outlet of the catheter package and the distal end of the urinary catheter is insertable into the distal end of tubular body to close the drain opening in the drainage outlet of the catheter package;

a length adjustment mechanism whereby a length of said tubular body is adjustable to allow exposing of the proximal end of the catheter through the catheter outlet; and

a seal mechanism configured to provide a fluid seal between the catheter proximate the distal end of the catheter and an interior of the cavity of the tubular body when the urinary catheter is in an extended position and projecting out of the tubular body so as to form a continuous fluid passageway from the proximal end of the catheter to the drainage outlet of the catheter package.

2. The assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the tubular body includes a telescopic arrangement with a first part of the tubular body being movable relative to a second part of the tubular body.

3. The assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the tubular body includes a concertina folded wall part.

4. The assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the tubular body has a wall of a flexible material allowing the wall to be squeezed into contact with the catheter by finger pressure.

5. The assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a detachable cover member closing the proximal end of the catheter package.

6. The assembly according to claim 5 , wherein at least one of the tubular body and the cover member include two portions having different cross sectional sizes.

7. The assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the tubular body further comprises a closing structure connected to said catheter and configured to open said distal end upon projection of the proximal end of said catheter from the package prior to use.

The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the tubular body is generally rigid and the length adjustment mechanism reduces the effective rigidity of the tubular body in an area so that the tubular body may be compressed in the area and allowing the tubular body to engage opposing sides of the catheter.

The catheter assembly of claim 8 , wherein the length adjustment mechanism is a concertina folded wall section configured such that selectively engaging, advancing and releasing the catheter through the folded wall section permits incremental movement of the catheter relative to the tubular body.

10. The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the seal mechanism is coupled with the catheter so that both the catheter and seal mechanism are moveable together and relative to the tubular body.

The catheter assembly of claim 10 , wherein the seal mechanism provides the fluid seal against the tubular body at a first position, wherein the proximal end of the catheter is within the tubular body, at a second position wherein the proximal end of the catheter is fully extended from the tubular, and at all points between.

12. The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the drainage outlet includes a one-way valve that prevents reentry into the catheter package of liquid drained out of the drainage outlet.

The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the proximal end of the urinary catheter projects out of the catheter outlet of the catheter package to allow catheterization of the urinary canal, and after catheterization the proximal end of the urinary catheter is retractable back into the catheter outlet of the catheter package and the distal end of the urinary catheter inserts into and seals the drain opening in the drainage outlet of the catheter package.

The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the urinary catheter is movable away from the drainage outlet of the catheter package to define an open catheterization position of the catheter assembly and movable into the drainage outlet of the catheter package to define a sealed catheterization position of the catheter assembly.
