Abstract

A low-melting point, heat transfer fluid comprising a mixture of LiNO 3 , NaNO 3 , KNO 3 , NaNO 2 and KNO 2 salts where the Li, Na and K cations are present in amounts of about 20-33.5 mol % Li, about 18.6-40 mol % Na, and about 40-50.3 mol % K and where the nitrate and nitrite anions are present in amounts of about 36-50 mol % NO 3 , and about 50-62.5 mol % NO 2 . These compositions can have liquidus temperatures between 70° C. and 80° C. for some compositions.

Claims (6)

1. A heat transfer fluid having a liquidus temperature of about 70° C., comprising a mixture of any combination of LiNO 3 , NaNO 3 , KNO 3 , NaNO 2 and KNO 2 salts, wherein the alkali cations lithium, sodium and potassium consist essentially of about 33.5 mol % Li, about 18.6 mol % Na, and about 47.9 mol % K, and wherein the nitrate and nitrite anions consist essentially of about 35.9% NO 3 and of about 64.1% NO 2 .

2. A heat transfer fluid having a liquidus temperature of about 75° C., comprising a mixture of any combination of LiNO 3 , NaNO 3 , KNO 3 , NaNO 2 and KNO 2 salts, wherein the alkali cations lithium, sodium and potassium consist essentially of about 29.8 mol % Li, about 19.9 mol % Na, and about 50.3 mol % K, and wherein the nitrate and nitrite anions consist essentially of about 37.5% NO 3 and of about 62.5% NO 2 .

3. A heat transfer fluid having a liquidus temperature of below 80° C. comprising a mixture of any combination of LiNO 3 , NaNO 3 , KNO 3 , NaNO 2 and KNO 2 salts, wherein the alkali cations lithium, sodium and potassium consist essentially of about 29.1 mol % to about 33.5% Li, about 18.6 mol % to about 22.6 mol % Na, and about 47.9 mol % to about 50.3 mol % K, and wherein the nitrate and nitrite anions consist essentially of about 35.9 mol % to about 41.2 mol % NO 3 and of about 58.8 mol % to about 64.1 mol % NO 2 .

4. A heat transfer fluid having a liquidus temperature of about 85° C. comprising a mixture of any combination of LiNO 3 , NaNO 3 , KNO 3 , NaNO 2 and KNO 2 salts, wherein the alkali cations lithium, sodium and potassium consist essentially of about 29.2 mol % to about 30.4 mol % Li, about 19.8 mol % to about 23.1 mol % Na, and about 47.7 mol % to about 49.8 mol % K, and wherein the nitrate and nitrite anions consist essentially of about 44.1 mol % to about 45.4 mol % NO 3 and of about 54.6 mol % to about 55.9 mol % NO 2 .

5. A heat transfer fluid having a liquidus temperature of about 95° C. comprising a mixture of any combination of LiNO 3 , NaNO 3 , KNO 3 , NaNO 2 and KNO 2 salts, wherein the alkali cations lithium, sodium and potassium consist essentially of about 20 mol % Li, about 40 mol % Na, and about 40 mol % K, and wherein the nitrate and nitrite anions consist essentially of about 50 mol % NO 3 and about 50 mol % NO 2 .
