Abstract

Compositions and methods related to transgenic glyphosate/ALS inhibitor-tolerant maize plants are provided. Specifically, the present invention provides maize plants having a DP-098140-6 event which imparts tolerance to glyphosate and at least one ALS-inhibiting herbicide. The maize plant harboring the DP-098140-6 event at the recited chromosomal location comprises genomic/transgene junctions having at least the polynucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO:5 and/or 6. The characterization of the genomic insertion site of the DP-098140-6 event provides for an enhanced breeding efficiency and enables the use of molecular markers to track the transgene insert in the breeding populations and progeny thereof. Various methods and compositions for the identification, detection, and use of the maize DP-098140-6 events are provided.

Claims (13)

1. A maize plant comprising event DP-098140-6 having stably integrated into its genome a polynucleotide comprising SEQ ID NO: 5 and 6.

2. The maize plant of claim 1 , wherein said plant is a progeny of a plant grown from seeds of ATCC Seed Deposit PTA-8296.

3. A transgenic seed comprising event DP-098140-6 having stably integrated into its genome a polynucleotide comprising SEQ ID NO: 5 and 6.

4. A transgenic seed of ATCC Seed Deposit PTA-8296.

5. A method of producing a glyphosate tolerant and ALS inhibitor tolerant plant comprising

breeding a plant comprising event DP-098140-6 having stably integrated into its genome a polynucleotide comprising SEQ ID NO: 5 and 6 or a plant that is a progeny of a plant grown from seeds of ATCC Seed Deposit PTA-8296,

and selecting progeny by analyzing for at least one polynucleotide comprising a DP-098140-6 specific region, wherein said polynucleotide comprises SEQ ID NO: 5 or 6.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein said polynucleotide comprises:

(a) a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:48, 7, 8, 9, 10, 49, or 50; or

(b) a nucleotide sequence comprising a fragment of SEQ ID NO: 48, 7, 8, 9, 10, 49, or 50.

A method for controlling weeds in an area of cultivation comprising applying an effective amount of glyphosate and/or an ALS inhibitor to the area of cultivation having a maize plant comprising event DP-098140-6 having stably integrated into its genome a polynucleotide comprising SEQ 1D NO: 5 and 6 or a maize plant that is a progeny of a maize plant grown from seeds of ATCC Seed Deposit PTA-8296 comprising event DP-098140-6.

8. The maize plant of claim 1 , wherein said maize plant further has stably incorporated into its genome a second polynucleotide encoding a second polypeptide, wherein said second polypeptide imparts tolerance to glyphosate by a distinct mode of action than glyphosate N-acetyl transferase.

9. The maize plant of claim 8 , wherein said second polypeptide encodes a glyphosate-tolerant 5-enol-pyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) polypeptide.
