Abstract

A high performance coil over-core guide wire. The guide wire incorporates a nickel-titanium core with a stainless steel coil to provide a wire with improved kink resistance and good pushability.

Claims (57)

1. A guide wire comprising:

an elongate core composed of a nickel-titanium alloy;

a coil composed of a second material, the coil surrounding the core and terminating along the core, the coil including a distal-most turn having a distal facing surface; and

a polymeric tip disposed on a distal portion of the core, extending proximally from a distal end of the guide wire, and terminating at the distal facing surface of the coil, without any portion of the polymeric tip extending proximally of the distal facing surface,

wherein the distal portion of the core is tapered, and

wherein the tapered portion of the core is covered by the polymeric tip.

2. The guide wire of claim 1 wherein the coil surrounds a portion of the core near a proximal end of the core.

3. The guide wire of claim 1 wherein the coil surrounds a proximal end of the core.

4. The guide wire of claim 1 wherein the coil extends along the core from a portion of the core near a proximal end of the core to the distal portion of the core.

5. The guide wire of claim 1 wherein the second material comprises stainless steel.

6. The guide wire of claim 1 wherein the second material comprises a precipitation hardenable alloy.

7. The guide wire of claim 1 wherein the polymeric tip comprises a radio-opaque material.

8. The guide wire of claim 1 wherein the coil comprises a coating.

9. The guide wire of claim 8 , wherein the coating includes at least one colored stripe.

10. The guide wire of claim 1 wherein the coil comprises a rectangular cross-section.

11. The guide wire of claim 1 wherein the coil comprises a circular cross-section.

12. The guide wire of claim 1 wherein the coil comprises a multifilar wire.

13. The guide wire of claim 12 wherein the multifilar wire is cross-wound.

14. The guide wire of claim 1 wherein the polymeric tip surrounds a distal end of the core.

15. The guide wire of claim 1 , wherein the polymeric tip comprises a blend of different polymers.

16. A guide wire comprising:

a core;

a coil surrounding the core and terminating along the core, the coil including a distal-most turn having a distal facing surface; and

a polymeric tip disposed on a distal portion of the core, extending proximally from a distal end of the guide wire, and terminating at the distal facing surface of the coil, without any portion of the polymeric tip extending proximally of the distal facing surface,

wherein the distal portion of the core is tapered, and

wherein the tapered portion of the core is covered by the polymeric tip.

17. The guide wire of claim 16 wherein the coil extends along the core from a portion of the core near a proximal end of the core to the distal portion of the core.

18. The guide wire of claim 16 wherein the coil comprises a coating.

19. The guide wire of claim 18 , wherein the coating includes at least one colored stripe.

20. The guide wire of claim 16 wherein the coil comprises a rectangular cross-section.

21. The guide wire of claim 16 wherein the coil comprises a circular cross-section.

22. The guide wire of claim 16 wherein the polymeric tip surrounds a distal end of the core.

23. The guide wire of claim 16 , wherein the polymeric tip comprises a blend of different polymers.

24. A guide wire comprising:

a core;

a coil surrounding the core and terminating along the core, the coil including a distal-most turn having a distal facing surface, wherein the coil surrounds a portion of the core, the entirety of the portion of the core surrounded by the coil having a length, and wherein the portion of the core surrounded by the coil has a substantially uniform cross-section along the length thereof; and

a polymeric tip disposed on a distal portion of the core, extending proximally from a distal end of the guide wire, and terminating at the distal facing surface of the coil, without any portion of the polymeric tip extending proximally of the distal facing surface.

25. The guide wire of claim 24 wherein the coil surrounds a portion of the core near a proximal end of the core.

26. The guide wire of claim 24 wherein the coil extends along the core from a portion of the core near a proximal end of the core to the distal portion of the core.

27. The guide wire of claim 24 wherein the core is composed of a nickel-titanium alloy and the coil is composed of a second material.

28. The guide wire of claim 24 wherein the distal portion of the core is tapered.

29. The guide wire of claim 28 wherein the tapered portion of the core is covered by the polymeric tip.

30. The guide wire of claim 24 wherein the coil comprises a coating.

31. The guide wire of claim 30 wherein the coating is lubricious.

32. The guide wire of claim 30 , wherein the coating includes at least one colored stripe.

33. The guide wire of claim 24 wherein the coil comprises a rectangular cross-section.
