Shoulder implant for glenoid replacement
The invention features a glenoid (shoulder socket) implant prosthesis, a humeral implant prosthesis, devices for implanting glenoid and humeral implant prostheses, and methods of their use for the treatment an injured or damaged shoulder.
1. An inset glenoid implant comprising a body portion having (i) a smooth concave lateral articulating surface adapted to be engaged by a humeral component, (ii) a medial surface adapted for positioning within a circular cavity reamed in the glenoid, (iii) a peripheral edge in the shape of a circle having a diameter circumferentially surrounding the body portion, and (iv) a central peg extending coaxially from the center of the medial surface, wherein the body in its entirety is cylindrically shaped and, when implanted, the peripheral edge of the glenoid implant is completely circumferentially surrounded by cortical bone of the glenoid.
2. The inset glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein said central peg has a length of about 8 millimeters (mm) or less.
3. The inset glenoid implant of claim 2 , wherein said peg is about 5 mm or less in length.
4. The inset glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein said glenoid implant is manufactured using polyethylene, metal, ceramic, or a combination thereof.
5. The inset glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the peripheral edge of said glenoid implant has a thickness of between about 3 and 6 mm.
6. The inset glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein said glenoid implant has a roughened or textured medial side.
7. The inset glenoid implant of claim 6 , wherein said medial side comprises a series of elongated grooves.
8. The inset glenoid implant of claim 1 , in combination with bone cement.
9. The inset glenoid implant of claim 8 , wherein said bone cement is polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA).
10. The inset glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the medial surface is flat.
11. The inset glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the medial surface is convex.
12. The inset glenoid implant of claim 1 , having bone cement adhered thereto.
13. An inset glenoid implant comprising a body portion having (i) a smooth concave lateral articulating surface adapted to be engaged by a humeral component, (ii) a medial surface adapted for positioning within a circular cavity reamed in the glenoid, (iii) a peripheral edge in the shape of a circle having a diameter circumferentially surrounding the body portion, and (iv) a peg extending from the medial surface, wherein the body as a whole is cylindrically shaped and, when implanted, the peripheral edge of the glenoid implant is completely circumferentially surrounded by cortical bone of the glenoid.
