Abstract

A pump set for use in a liquid delivery pump of the type for delivering liquid to a patient, having an infrared radiation detector for detecting infrared radiation, and providing an indication that the pump set is properly loaded on the pump. The pump set comprises a conduit for the liquid and a safety interlock member which is carried by the conduit. The safety interlock member is formed of a material that transmits infrared radiation and blocks visible light.

Claims (33)

1. A pump set for use in a liquid delivery pump of the type for delivering liquid to a patient, having an infrared radiation detector for detecting infrared radiation, and providing an indication that the pump set is properly loaded on the pump, the pump set comprising:

a conduit for the liquid comprising a tube section;

a drip chamber carried by the conduit for receiving metered portions of liquid; and

a safety interlock member which is carried by the conduit, formed of a compositionally homogeneous material which transmits infrared radiation and blocks visible light, and adapted for placement in a path of infrared radiation propagation toward the infrared radiation detector for cooperating with the detector to indicate whether the pump set is properly loaded on the pump, the tube section extending between the drip chamber and safety interlock device and adapted for engaging a pumping device of the pump for delivering the liquid to the patient.

2. The pump set of claim 1 wherein the safety interlock member transmits radiation within a wavelength range between about 750 nm and about 1000 μm and blocks visible light radiation within a wavelength range between about 380 nm and about 740 nm.

3. The pump set of claim 1 wherein the safety interlock member comprises a thermoplastic material.

4. The pump set of claim 3 wherein the thermoplastic material comprises polyvinyl chloride.

5. The pump set of claim 4 wherein the thermoplastic material is molded, injection molded, or extruded at a temperature between about 207° C. and about 216° C.

6. A pump set for use in a liquid delivery pump of the type for delivering liquid to a patient, having an infrared radiation detector for detecting infrared radiation, and providing an indication that the pump set is properly loaded on the pump, the pump set comprising:

a conduit for the liquid comprising a tube section;

a drip chamber carried by the conduit for receiving metered portions of liquid; and

a safety interlock member which is carried by the conduit, formed of a colorant-free plastic material which transmits infrared radiation and blocks visible light, and adapted for placement in a path of infrared radiation propagation toward the infrared radiation detector for cooperating with the detector to indicate whether the pump set is properly loaded on the pump, the tube section extending between the drip chamber and safety interlock device and adapted for engaging a pumping device of the pump for delivering the liquid to the patient.

7. The pump set of claim 6 wherein the safety interlock member transmits radiation within a wavelength range between about 750 nm and about 1000 μm and blocks visible light radiation within a wavelength range between about 380 nm and about 740 nm.

8. The pump set of claim 6 wherein the safety interlock member comprises a thermoplastic material.

9. The pump set of claim 8 wherein the thermoplastic material comprises polyvinyl chloride.

10. The pump set of claim 9 wherein the thermoplastic material is molded, injection molded, or extruded at a temperature between about 207° C. and about 216° C.

11. A pump set for use in a liquid delivery pump of the type for delivering liquid to a patient, having an infrared radiation detector for detecting infrared radiation, and providing an indication that the pump set is properly loaded on the pump, the pump set comprising:

a conduit for the liquid comprising a tube section;

a drip chamber carried by the conduit for receiving metered portions of liquid; and a safety interlock member carried by the conduit and which transmits infrared radiation and blocks visible light, comprises a polymer having visible-light-absorbing polyenes, and is adapted for placement in a path of infrared radiation propagation toward the infrared radiation detector for cooperating with the detector to indicate whether the pump set is properly loaded on the pump, the tube section extending between the drip chamber and safety interlock device and adapted for engaging a pumping device of the pump for delivering the liquid to the patient.

12. The pump set of claim 11 wherein the safety interlock member is carried by the conduit.

13. The pump set of claim 12 wherein the safety interlock member transmits radiation within a wavelength range between about 750 nm and about 1000 μm and blocks visible light radiation within a wavelength range between about 380 nm and about 740 nm.

14. The pump set of claim 12 wherein the safety interlock member comprises a thermoplastic material.

15. The pump set of claim 14 wherein the thermoplastic material comprises polyvinyl chloride.

16. The pump set of claim 15 wherein the thermoplastic material is molded, injection molded, or extruded at a temperature between about 207° C. and about 216° C.

17. A pump set for use in a liquid delivery pump of the type for delivering liquid to a patient, having an infrared radiation detector for detecting infrared radiation, and providing an indication that the pump set is properly loaded on the pump, the pump set comprising:

a conduit for the liquid comprising a tube section;

a drip chamber carried by the conduit for receiving metered portions of liquid; and

a safety interlock member carried by the conduit and which transmits infrared radiation and blocks visible light, comprises a dehydrochlorinated polyvinyl chloride material, and is adapted for placement in a path of infrared radiation propagation toward the infrared radiation detector for cooperating with the detector to indicate whether the pump set is properly loaded on the pump, the tube section extending between the drip chamber and safety interlock device and adapted for engaging a pumping device of the pump for delivering the liquid to the patient.

18. The pump set of claim 17 wherein the safety interlock member is carried by the conduit.

19. The pump set of claim 18 wherein the safety interlock member transmits radiation within a wavelength range between about 750 nm and about 1000 μm and blocks visible light radiation within a wavelength range between about 380 nm and about 740 nm.

20. The pump set of claim 18 wherein the safety interlock member comprises a thermoplastic material.

21. The pump set of claim 20 wherein the thermoplastic material comprises polyvinyl chloride.
