Abstract

A laryngeal stimulation system including a sensor for detecting an occurrence of a respiratory signal in a subject and a laryngeal stimulator adapted for coupling to a laryngeal muscle and operable to stimulate the laryngeal muscle in response to the sensor detecting the occurrence of the respiratory signal is provided. A method for laryngeal stimulation including detecting an occurrence of a respiratory signal in a subject and then stimulating a laryngeal muscle in response to detecting the occurrence of the respiratory signal is also provided.

Claims (9)

1. A laryngeal stimulation system comprising:

(a) a sensor for detecting an occurrence of a respiratory signal in a subject;

(b) a first electrode adapted to be implanted into a first synkinetically reinnervated laryngeal muscle and a second electrode adapted to be implanted into a second synkinetically reinnervated laryngeal muscle; and

(c) a pulse generator that is programmed to apply electrical pulses to a patient through the first and second electrodes to generate independent bilateral stimulation of the first synkinetically reinnervated laryngeal muscle and the second synkinetically reinnervated laryngeal muscle in response to the sensor detecting the occurrence of the respiratory signal with respect to each muscle.

2. The laryngeal stimulation system of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode or second electrode further comprises a plurality of electrodes adapted to be implanted.

3. The laryngeal stimulation system of claim 1 , wherein the first or second synkinetically reinnervated laryngeal muscle is a posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle.

4. The laryngeal stimulation system of claim 1 , wherein the respiratory signal comprises an inspiratory phase.

5. The laryngeal stimulation system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is adapted to indicate the occurrence of an action potential in response to the action potential having a predetermined relationship with respect to a threshold.

6. The laryngeal stimulation system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a differential pressure transducer adapted to detect a pressure difference between intrapleural pressure of the patient and atmospheric pressure, wherein the difference indicates the occurrence of the respiratory signal.
