Abstract

This invention is methods of reducing stress in the retina that are caused by the implanted electrode array body having an oval shape that is curved to conform to the curvature of the retina and having a mounting aperture in the body for attaching the electrode array to the retina with a tack where a strain relief internal tab is place around a strain relief slot.

Claims (10)

1. A method of reducing stress, due to an implanted electrode array body on a retina of an eye, the eye having a curvature, comprising the steps of:

providing a soft flexible oval shaped electrode array body having a central portion and an edge;

rounding said central portion to a radius of curvature to approximate said curvature of the eye; and

rounding said edge having a radius of curvature by decreasing said edge radius of curvature as compared with said central portion radius of curvature sufficiently to lift said edge off of the retina of the eye.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of providing a grasping handle attached to said soft flexible oval shaped electrode array body for holding with a surgical instrument during implantation.

3. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of making said soft flexible oval shaped electrode array body of silicone having a hardness of about 50 or less on the Shore A scale as measured with a durometer.

The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of providing a feeder cable, having a length, that is attached to said soft flexible oval shaped electrode array body for transmitting electrical signals to said soft flexible oval shaped electrode array body, said feeder cable containing a plurality of conductors that transmit electrical signals to said soft flexible oval shaped electrode array body.

5. The method according to claim 4 , further comprising the step of coiling said plurality of conductors in said feeder cable to eliminate pulling said soft flexible oval shaped electrode array body by said feeder cable due to mechanical or thermal stresses.

6. The method according to claim 4 , further comprising the step of filling said feeder cable with silicone having a hardness of about 50 or less on the Shore A scale as measured with a durometer.

7. The method according to claim 4 , further comprising the step of providing a plurality of fixation tabs comprised of silicone along said length of said feeder cable for attachment of said soft flexible oval shaped electrode array body to the retina of an eye.
