Abstract

A system for performing chest compression for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. The system includes a motor, drive spool and associated couplings which allow for controlling and limiting the movement of the compressing mechanism and includes a control system for controlling the operation and interaction of the various components to provide for optimal automatic operation of the system.

Claims (22)

1. A method of performing CPR on a cardiac arrest patient, said method comprising:

providing a chest compression device comprising:

a belt adapted to extend at least partially around the chest of the patient and fastened on the patient;

belt tensioning means operably connected to the belt for repeatedly tightening and loosening the belt around the chest of the patient;

a motor operably connected to the belt tensioning means, said motor capable of operating the belt tensioning means repeatedly to cause the belt to tighten about the chest of the patient and loosen about the chest of the patient;

a brake operably connected to the belt tensioning means and capable of holding the belt in a tightened state about the chest of the patient;

operating the chest compression device to cause repeated cycles of tightening of the belt to a set threshold of tightness, and operating the brake during said cycles of tightening of the belt to engage the belt tightening means when the belt has been tightened to said threshold of tightness to momentarily hold the belt at said threshold of tightness, and disengaging the brake during said cycles to allow the belt to loosen about the patient.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of determining the threshold of tightness based on an initial condition of the belt when extended around the chest of the patient.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of determining the threshold of tightness based on the torque to be applied by the belt compression means to the belt during operation of the device.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of determining the threshold of tightness based on the maximum acceptable take-up of the belt during operation of the device.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of determining the threshold of tightness based on a measured size of the patient and a predetermined allowable change to the circumference of the patient's chest.

6. A method of performing CPR on a cardiac arrest patient, said method comprising:

providing a chest compression device comprising:

a belt adapted to extend around the chest of the patient and fastened on the patient;

a drive spool operably connected to the belt and adapted to rotate and take up the belt;

a motor operably connected to the drive spool, said motor capable of operating the drive spool repeatedly to cause the belt to tighten about the chest of the patient and loosen about the chest of the patient;

a brake operably connected to the drive spool and capable of preventing the drive spool from rotating;

operating the chest compression device to cause repeated cycles of tightening of the belt to a set threshold of tightness, and operating the brake during said cycles of tightening of the belt to engage the drive spool when the belt has been tightened to said threshold of tightness to momentarily hold the belt at said threshold of tightness, and disengaging the brake during said cycles to allow the belt to loosen about the patient.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising the step of determining the threshold of tightness based on an initial condition of the belt when extended around the chest of the patient.

8. The method of claim 6 further comprising the step of determining the threshold of tightness based on the torque to be applied by the belt compression means to the belt during operation of the device.

9. The method of claim 6 further comprising the step of determining the threshold of tightness based on the maximum acceptable take-up of the belt during operation of the device.

10. The device of claim 6 further comprising the step of determining the threshold of tightness based on a measured size of the patient and a predetermined allowable change to the circumference of the patient's chest.
