Abstract

A medicament dispensing device for dispensing metered dosages of a medicament includes an actuator housing having a longitudinally extending cavity and a container disposed in the cavity and having a cylinder with a first outer diameter. The cylinder is adapted to hold the medicament. The container is reciprocally movable relative to the actuator housing along a longitudinal axis. An indicating device includes an indicator housing having a tubular portion connected to said container, with the indicating device being reciprocally movable with the container relative to the actuator housing. The tubular portion has a second outer diameter that is of substantially the same diameter as the first outer diameter. A longitudinally extending side wall has a viewing window formed therein. An indicator is rotatably mounted in the indicator housing, with a surface thereof having indicia visible through the viewing window.

Claims (44)

1. An indicating device suitable for indicating the number of dosages of a substance that have been dispensed from or remain in a container, said indicating device comprising:

a housing;

an actuator moveably mounted in said housing, wherein said actuator is reciprocally moveable relative to said housing in a longitudinal direction;

a first indicator comprising a first indicia bearing surface, said first indicator rotatably mounted in said housing about a first rotation axis extending in said longitudinal direction; and

a second indicator comprising a second indicia bearing surface, said second indicator rotatably mounted in said housing about a second rotation axis, wherein said first and second rotation axes are non-parallel, wherein said first and second indicia bearing surfaces align at a common viewing area to collectively present at least a portion of the number of dosages of substance that have been dispensed from or remain in the container.

2. The indicating device of claim 1 wherein said housing comprises a viewing window defining said common viewing area.

3. The indicating device of claim 1 wherein said first and second indicators have first and second diameters respectively, wherein said first diameter is greater than said second diameter.

4. The indicating device of claim 1 wherein said first indicator comprises a ring having a central opening formed therethrough.

5. The indicating device of claim 4 wherein said second indicator comprises an axle extending from a center thereof, wherein said axle is supported by said housing.

6. The indicating device of claim 1 further comprising a spring biasing said actuator away from said first indicator.

7. The indicating device of claim 1 wherein said first and second indicators are non-translatably mounted in said housing.

8. The indicating device of claim 1 wherein said housing comprises a first housing component having a peripheral side wall defining a cavity, wherein said first and second indicators are disposed in said cavity, and further comprising an second housing component secured to said first housing component, wherein said second housing component encloses said cavity.

9. The indicating device of claim 8 wherein said second housing component comprises said actuator.

10. The indicating device of claim 8 wherein said second housing component is snap-fitted to said first housing component.

11. The indicating device of claim 8 wherein said first housing component comprises a cylindrical shape.

12. The indicating device of claim 1 in combination with a metered-dose inhaler having a container filled with a medication.

13. A dispensing device for dispensing dosages of medicament comprising:

an actuator housing comprising a cavity and a nozzle support block extending from a bottom of said cavity;

a container containing a medicament, said container comprising a valve stem adapted to be fitted in said nozzle block, wherein said container is reciprocally moveable relative to said actuator housing in a longitudinal direction; and

an indicating device comprising:

an indicator housing;

a dose counter actuator extending from said indicator housing and engaged by and reciprocally moveable with said container relative to said indicator housing in said longitudinal direction;

a first indicator comprising a first indicia bearing surface, said first indicator rotatably mounted in said housing about a first rotation axis extending in said longitudinal direction; and

a second indicator comprising a second indicia bearing surface, said second indicator rotatably mounted in said housing about a second rotation axis, wherein said first and second rotation axes are non-parallel, wherein said first and second indicia bearing surfaces align at a common viewing area to collectively present at least a portion of the number of dosages of medicament that have been dispensed from or remain in the container.

14. The dispensing device of claim 13 wherein said housing comprises a viewing window defining said common viewing area.

15. The dispensing device of claim 13 wherein said first and second indicators have first and second diameters respectively, wherein said first diameter is greater than said second diameter.

16. The dispensing device of claim 13 wherein said first indicator member comprises a ring having a central opening formed therethrough.

17. The dispensing device of claim 16 wherein said second indicator comprises an axle extending from a center thereof, wherein said axle is supported by said indicator housing.

18. The dispensing device of claim 13 further comprising a spring biasing said dose counter actuator away from said first indicator.

19. The dispensing device of claim 13 wherein said first and second indicators are non-translatably mounted in said indicator housing.

20. The dispensing device of claim 13 wherein said indicator housing comprises a cylindrical shape.

21. A method for dispensing a medicament to a patient comprising:

providing an actuator housing having a support block, said actuator housing having a generally open end opposite said support block;

inserting a container filled with a predetermined number of measured dosages of medicament into said actuator housing, and coupling a valve stem of said container with said support block;

reciprocally moving said container relative to said actuator housing in a longitudinal direction and thereby successively moving said valve stem between closed and open positions;

dispensing one of said measured dosages of medicament through said support block upon each reciprocal movement of said container relative to said actuator housing;

engaging a dose counter actuator with said container and moving said dose counter actuator with said container upon said reciprocal movements of said container;

rotating a first indicator about a first rotation axis extending in said longitudinal direction in response to a first predetermined number of movements of said dose counter actuator, said first indicator comprising a first indicia bearing surface;

rotating a second indicator about a second rotation axis in response to a second predetermined number of movements of said dose counter actuator, said second indicator comprising a second indicia bearing surface, wherein said first and second rotation axes are non-parallel; and

viewing said first and second indicia bearing surfaces aligned at a common viewing area to collectively present at least a portion of the number of dosages of medicament that have been dispensed from or remain in the container.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein said first and second indicators have first and second diameters respectively, wherein said first diameter is greater than said second diameter.

23. The method of claim 21 wherein said first indicator comprises a ring having a central opening formed therethrough.

24. The method of claim 21 wherein said second indicator comprises an axle extending from a center thereof, wherein said axle is supported by said housing.

25. The method of claim 21 further comprising biasing said dose counter actuator away from said first indicator with a spring.
