Abstract

In wireless communications such as in the Bluetooth communication system, an execution unit sequentially receives software instructions for execution. Prior to completing each instruction, the execution unit issues an interrupt indicating the upcoming completion of the instruction execution and awaits receipt of the next instruction. A Link Manager issues limited instructions, and a Link Controller includes a hardware execution unit for executing the limited instructions. A processing unit in the Link Manager performs remaining functions under control of a software program.

Claims (21)

1. A system to execute instructions, comprising:

an execution unit configured to execute a plurality of instructions including a first instruction and a second instruction, and configured to issue a request for the second instruction prior to completion of execution of the first instruction; and

a link manager coupled to the execution unit and configured to provide the second instruction to the execution unit upon receiving the request from the execution unit.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an instruction stack configured to store instructions for execution by the execution unit.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the link manager is configured to provide the second instruction to the execution unit by writing the second instruction to the instruction stack.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the request is an interrupt issued by the execution unit.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit issues an interrupt if it does not receive the second instruction in response to the request.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit is configured to issue the request when the amount of time to complete execution of the first instruction is equal to a predetermined amount of time.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit issues an interrupt to indicate availability of data in a receive buffer.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein a time required to execute different instructions by the execution unit is different.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein each instruction includes a parameter that indicates the number of times the instruction is to be executed.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit is configured to aborta specific instruction upon writing of a specific bit to the abort and reset register.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit is configured to, upon receiving a master Asynchronous Connection-Less (ACL) command, establish an ACL link on a per-slot basis.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit is configured to, upon receiving a master Synchronous Connection-Oriented (SCO) command, establishes a symmetric point-to-point link between a master device and a slave device.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit is configured to, upon receiving a page command, activate and connect to a slave device.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit is configured to, upon receiving an inquiry command, determine devices within a pre-determined range and collect device addresses of devices within the pre-determined range.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit is configured to, upon receiving an inquiry scan command, scan for an inquiry access code for a period of time that is sufficient to scan for a pre-determined number of inquiry frequencies.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit is configured to, upon receiving an inquiry response command, detect receipt of an identification packet.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit is configured to, upon receiving an poll unpark command, periodically poll slave devices to determined whether a slave device is requesting to be unparked.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit is configured to, upon receiving a request unpark command, to build an access window to request an unpark.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the execution unit is configured to, upon receiving an idle command, designate a number of slots on which no activity is to occur.
