Abstract

Floor panels are shown, which are provided with a mechanical locking system having tongue of magnetic material that could be locked vertically by a magnetic field.

Claims (24)

1. A method of vertically connecting a set of floor panels provided with a locking system comprising a magnetic tongue arranged in an edge of a first floor panel and a tongue groove in an adjacent edge of a second floor panel, and a protruding strip at one of the edges cooperating with the other adjacent edge for locking of the first and the second panels in a first vertical direction, wherein the method comprises the steps of:

positioning the edges of the first and the second panels adjacent to each other and in essentially the same plane by placing one of the edges against the protruding strip; and

vertically locking the edges in a second vertical direction by displacing the magnetic tongue into the tongue groove by applying a magnetic field.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the magnetic field is applied by permanent magnet.

3. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the method comprise the step of unlocking a tongue-locking device by applying a magnetic field to displace the magnetic tongue.

4. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the protruding strip is distinct from the tongue, the protruding strip protruding from a vertical plane defined by immediately juxtaposed upper parts of two adjacent joint edges of two joined floor panels.

5. A set of floor panels provided with a mechanical locking system, the mechanical locking system comprising:

a tongue, at an edge of a first floor panel, cooperating with a tongue groove in an adjacent edge of a similar second floor panel for connecting the edges vertically in a second vertical direction; and

a protruding strip, at one of the adjacent edges, cooperating with the other adjacent edge for locking of the first and the second panels in a first vertical direction, the protruding strip being distinct from the tongue, the protruding strip protruding from a vertical plane defined by immediately juxtaposed upper parts of two adjacent joint edges of two joined floor panels,

wherein the tongue is slidable and comprises a magnetic material, and

wherein the mechanical locking system is configured to be activated by a magnetic field, the activation being a change in locking state from locked to unlocked, or from unlocked to locked, of the mechanical locking system in the second vertical direction.

6. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the protruding strip is a locking strip provided with a locking element, the locking element protruding from the locking strip, cooperating with a locking groove in the other adjacent edge for horizontal connection of the first and second panels.

7. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the mechanical locking system comprises a tongue-locking device which provides resistance to sliding of the tongue in absence of the magnetic field and provides less or no resistance to sliding of the tongue in the presence of the magnetic field.

8. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the tongue-locking device comprises a flexible tongue section, which prevents displacement with a vertical pre tension against a groove part.

9. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the tongue-locking device comprises a protrusion, which protrudes vertically from the tongue.

10. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the tongue-locking device comprises a magnet arranged at the adjacent edge.

11. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the tongue-locking device is a one-way locking device.

12. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the tongue is arranged in a displacement groove of the first panel.

13. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the magnetic tongue is displaceable vertically and horizontally within the displacement groove.

14. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the tongue has an inner position and an outer position, wherein the tongue is slidable from the inner position to the outer position by a magnetic field, wherein the tongue in the outer position, in which the edges are connected in the second vertical direction, is spaced from the inner part of the displacement groove along its complete length and wherein such space is larger in the outer position than in an inner position, in which the edges are free in the second vertical direction.

15. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the tongue is displaceable along the edge by the magnetic field.

16. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 5 , wherein a permanent magnet is arranged at the edge of the second floor panel.

17. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the locking system is configured to be changed from the mechanical locking system being unlocked in the second vertical direction to the mechanical locking system being locked in the second vertical direction by the magnetic field.

18. The set of floor panels as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the locking system is configured to be changed from the mechanical locking system being locked in the second vertical direction to the mechanical locking system being unlocked in the second vertical direction by the magnetic field.
