Abstract

A catheter system comprising a guidewire, an endovascular catheter, and an aspiration catheter. The guidewire has an expandable occluder mounted on a distal end. The guidewire and the endovascular catheter are insertable into a lumen of the aspiration catheter. The aspiration catheter also includes infusion and aspiration lumen(s) and port(s). Methods of using the catheter system for treating a vascular lesion and removing embolic material during the procedure are also disclosed.

Claims (15)

1. A system for endoluminal aspiration of embolic material, the system having a proximal end, a distal end and a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, the system comprising:

a guidewire having a proximal end and a distal end; and

an aspiration catheter system having a proximal end and a distal end and having an aspiration lumen in fluid communication with a source of suction, an infusion lumen in fluid communication with a source of infusion fluid, a guidewire lumen adapted to receive the guidewire,

wherein the aspiration lumen has a distal end and a first port at the aspiration lumen distal end, and wherein the infusion lumen has a distal end and a first port proximate the infusion lumen distal end,

wherein the infusion lumen distal port faces generally radially with respect to the longitudinal axis,

wherein the aspiration lumen distal port is distal the infusion lumen distal port, and wherein there are no intervening ports between the aspiration lumen distal port and the infusion lumen distal port,

wherein the aspiration lumen and the infusion lumen are non-coaxial, and

wherein the aspiration lumen distal port is an aspiration port at the aspiration catheter system distal end.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the guidewire further comprises an expandable member disposed on the guidewire distal end.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the expandable member is an occlusive member.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the aspiration lumen distal port and infusion lumen distal port cooperate to create a venturi effect when the source of suction and the source of infusion fluid are operated.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the aspiration lumen has a greater cross-sectional area at the distal end of the aspiration lumen than a cross-sectional area of the aspiration lumen at the distal end of the infusion lumen.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the guidewire lumen extends distally of the aspiration and infusion lumens.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the aspiration lumen distal port. faces distally.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the aspiration lumen has a proximal end and wherein the aspiration lumen is defined by a wall of the aspiration catheter system having no openings between the aspiration lumen proximal end and the aspiration lumen distal port.
