Abstract

An anisotropic wound drape for treating a wound on a patient includes a flexible sheet for placing over a tissue site. The flexible sheet includes a first isotropic zone, and a second isotropic zone. The first isotropic zone and the second isotropic zone are configured to provide the flexible sheet with anisotropic stretching properties. The anisotropic drape may used as part of a reduced-pressure wound treatment system. Other systems and methods are also presented.

Claims (34)

1. A reduced-pressure wound treatment system for treating a tissue site on a patient, the system comprising:

a wound drape formed from a substantially impermeable material:

a flexible sheet comprising:

a first isotropic zone,

a second isotropic zone, and

wherein the first isotropic zone and the second isotropic zone are configured to provide the flexible sheet with anisotropic stretching properties;

a manifold for disposing between the wound drape and the tissue site; and

a reduced-pressure subsystem for delivering a reduced pressure to the manifold.

2. The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 further comprising a gripping member coupled to the wound drape and wherein the wound drape and the gripping member are operable to form a fluid seal over the tissue site.

The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 further comprising a gripping member coupled to the wound drape, the gripping member operable to transmit a closing force to the patient's skin, wherein the wound drape and the gripping member are operable to form a fluid seal over the tissue site.

4. The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone has a first thickness (t 1 ) and the second isotropic zone has a second thickness (t 2 ) and wherein the first thickness is greater than the second thickness (t 1 >t 2 ).

The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone has a first thickness (t 1 ) and the second isotropic zone has a second thickness (t 2 ) and wherein the first thickness is greater than one hundred five percent (105%) of the second thickness (t 1 >105% t 2 ).

The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone has a first thickness (t 1 ) and the second isotropic zone has a second thickness (t 2 ) and wherein the first thickness is greater than one hundred ten percent (110%) of the second thickness (t 1 >110% t 2 ).

The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone has a first thickness (t 1 ) and the second isotropic zone has a second thickness (t 2 ), wherein the first thickness is greater than the second thickness (t 1 >t 2 ), and wherein the first isotropic zone comprises at least two coupled portions of drape material.

The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone comprises a first material having a first modulus of elasticity (λ 1 ); the second isotropic zone comprises a second material having a second modulus of elasticity (λ 2 ); and the first modulus of elasticity is greater than the second modulus of elasticity (λ 1 >λ 2 ).

The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone comprises a first material having a first modulus of elasticity (λ 1 ); the second isotropic zone comprises a second material having a second modulus of elasticity (λ 2 ); the first modulus of elasticity is greater than the second modulus of elasticity (λ 1 >λ 2 ); and the second modulus of elasticity (λ 2 ) is substantially similar to a modulus of elasticity of the patient's skin.

The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone comprises a first material having a first modulus of elasticity (λ 1 ); the second isotropic zone comprises a second material having a second modulus of elasticity (λ 2 ); the first modulus of elasticity is greater than the second modulus of elasticity (λ 1 >λ 2 ); and the second modulus of elasticity (λ 2 ) is within ten percent of a modulus of elasticity of the patient's skin.

The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone comprises a first material having a first modulus of elasticity (λ 1 ); the second isotropic zone comprises a second material having a second modulus of elasticity (λ 2 ); the first modulus of elasticity is greater than the second modulus of elasticity (λ 1 >λ 2 ); and the second modulus of elasticity (λ 2 ) is within five percent of a modulus of elasticity of the patient's skin.

12. The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone is substantially parallel with the second isotropic zone.

13. The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone is substantially concentric with the second isotropic zone.

14. The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone is substantially concentric with the second isotropic zone and wherein the first isotropic zone is substantially annulus shaped in plan view.

15. The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone is substantially concentric with the second isotropic zone and wherein the first isotropic zone is substantially annular-square shaped in plan view.

16. The reduced-pressure wound treatment system of claim 1 wherein the first isotropic zone comprises a fluidly inflatable bladder.

17. A wound drape comprising:

a flexible sheet formed from a substantially impermeable material for placing over a tissue site, the flexible sheet including:

a first isotropic zone,

a second isotropic zone, and

wherein the first isotropic zone and the second isotropic zone are configured to provide the flexible sheet with anisotropic stretching properties.

18. A method for treating a wound on a patient with reduced pressure, the method comprising the steps of:

disposing a manifold proximate the wound;

disposing an anisotropic wound drape over the manifold;

sealing the anisotropic drape to the patient's epidermis;

fluidly coupling a reduced-pressure source to the manifold; and

wherein the anisotropic drape is formed from a substantially impermeable material and comprises a first isotropic zone and a second isotropic zone such that the anisotropic drape stretches more in a first direction than a second direction.
