Abstract

A container having a compactor and bin for waste is disclosed permitting on-premises and remote monitoring of the system and collection is disclosed. The system can also detect non-complaint materials placed therein and act thereon. Methods are further disclosed for inventorying identification tags for tracking packages, merchandise and tags disposed of.

Claims (14)

1. A method for recycling identifying information stored on tags of items with each tag corresponding to an item, comprising the steps of:

providing a waste container having a door to an interior with an antenna and reader associated therewith for reading the identification information on the tags within the container, wherein the antenna is in direct communication with the interior of the container and encased such that false readings by the antenna emanating from a source external to the container are minimized;

providing a ram within the container for compacting items within the container;

providing a sensor coupled to the antenna and responsive to opening and closing of the door, wherein the antenna is activated when the door is closed and deactivated when the door is open;

collecting the identifying information associated with the items in the container when the door is closed;

disposing of the items in the container;

activating the ram to compact items in the container;

recording the time the ram is activated;

destroying the tags within the container; and,

reassigning the collected identifying information to new tags associated with new items after the destroying step.

2. The method of claim 1 further including the step of communicating the collected identifying information to a system capable of inventorying the collected identifying information and reassigning the collected identifying information.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the tags are passive RFID tags and the antenna further activates the tags.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the tags are EAS tags.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein the tags are different types of tags, such as RFID tags and EAS tags.
