Abstract

A sealing assembly for a shaft includes a sealing component, a first ring, a second ring, and at least one energizer. The first ring is annularly disposed about the shaft, the first ring having at least one first protuberance interfittable with the sealing component. The second ring is annularly disposed about the shaft in facing opposition to the first ring, the second ring having at least one second protuberance interfittable with the sealing component. The at least one energizer energizes the seal component, the at least one energizer being adjacent the at least one first protuberance or the at least one second protuberance.

Claims (21)

1. A sealing assembly for a shaft, comprising:

a sealing component;

a first ring annularly disposed about the shaft, said first ring having at least one first protuberance interfittable with said sealing component;

a second ring annularly disposed about the shaft in facing opposition to said first ring, said second ring having at least one second protuberance interfittable with said sealing component, each of said first ring and said second ring including crosscut interconnecting bores configured for relieving pressure during operation; and

at least one energizer to energize said seal component, said at least one energizer being adjacent one of said at least one first protuberance and said at least one second protuberance.

2. The sealing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the sealing assembly is configured for being disposed in one of a single gland, groove, and space of a housing.

3. The sealing assembly of claim 2 , wherein the sealing assembly is configured for sealing in two axial directions in one of said single gland, groove, and space and is thereby configured for providing bi-directional sealing in a high-pressure seal operational area.

4. The sealing assembly of claim 3 , wherein said first and second protuberances each include at least one said bore configured for relieving pressure, removing a contaminant, and cooling the sealing assembly, said at least one energizer including two said energizers, said energizers being adjacent respectively said first and second protuberances, each said energizer including at least one through-bore configured for relieving pressure, removing a contaminant, and cooling the sealing assembly, said first and second rings each including an outward side with a notch configured for relieving pressure.

5. The sealing assembly of claim 3 , wherein said sealing component is configured, in one direction, for sealing between the shaft and a housing and, when pressure is at least one of relieved and reversed, for bearing up on at least one of said first and second protuberances.

6. The sealing assembly of claim 3 , wherein said sealing component includes two pairs of outwardly facing seal lips, said pairs of seal lips opposing one another, said at least one energizer including two said energizers, said energizers being adjacent respectively said first and second protuberances, each said energizer disposed between a respective said pair of seal lips, said first and second rings being configured for moving into and at least partially out of a space between said seal lips of each said pair.

7. The sealing assembly of claim 3 , wherein said sealing component includes two pairs of outwardly facing seal lips, said at least one energizer including two said energizers, said energizers being adjacent respectively said first and second protuberances, the sealing assembly configured for being self-actuating such that said energizers, at least in part, control a plurality of seal lip pressures and a pressure relief by causing movement of at least one of said first ring and said second ring at least one of toward and away from said energizers.

8. The sealing assembly of claim 3 , wherein said first and second rings are configured for preventing a collapse of said sealing component.

9. A sealing assembly for a shaft, comprising:

a first sealing component;

a first spring energizer associated with said first sealing component; and

an annular support member configured for supporting said first sealing component, said annular support member including crosscut interconnecting bores configured for relieving pressure during operation, the sealing assembly configured for being disposed in one of a single gland, groove, and space of a housing and for sealing in two axial directions in one of said single gland, groove, and space and being thereby configured for providing bi-directional sealing in a high-pressure seal operational area.

10. The sealing assembly of claim 9 , further comprising a second sealing component and a second spring energizer associated with said second sealing component, said first and second sealing components each having a pair of seal lips, said pairs of seal lips facing each other, said first and second spring energizers each configured for energizing respectively said first and second sealing components, each said spring energizer being respectively between one said pair of seal lips, said annular support member being disposed about the shaft and positioned between said first and second sealing components and said first and second spring energizers, said annular support member including two outwardly facing protuberances each of which interfits with a respective said pair of seal lips.

11. The sealing assembly of claim 10 , wherein said annular support member includes a plurality of bores configured for relieving pressure, removing a contaminant, and cooling the sealing assembly, said first and second sealing components each including an outward side with at least one notch configured for relieving pressure.

12. The sealing assembly of claim 10 , wherein said protuberances are configured for preventing a collapse of said first and second sealing components and said pairs of seal lips and for permitting a pressure release.

13. The sealing assembly of claim 10 , wherein the sealing assembly is configured for being self-actuating such that said first and second spring energizers, at least in part, control a plurality of seal lip pressures and a pressure relief by causing movement of at least one of said first sealing component and said second sealing component at least one of toward and away from said annular support member.

14. The sealing assembly of claim 10 , wherein the sealing assembly is configured for being positioned within one of said single gland, groove, and space which has an enlarged center section which is set off at least 10 degrees from parallel to the shaft.
