Integrated media content server system and method for the customization of metadata that is associated therewith
A system and method for the customization of media content metadata that is transmitted to any one of a plurality of end user devices of differing types. The system is adapted to modify individual records or even individual fields from the entire gamut of available metadata into a metadata feed which is optimally suited for display upon the type of end user device. Additionally, the system is also able to modify the records or individual fields from a list of all metadata instances according to pre-recorded user preferences. The result is a system that optimally utilizes the current connection path in order to reduce congestion thereon, or to alleviate any user potential frustration caused by sporadic performance of the overloaded interconnection path.
1. A hand held communications device for facilitating the selection of media content offerings in a media content distribution system, the hand held communications device comprising:
a processor and a memory;
a communications circuit that allows the hand held communications device to access a content server storing a plurality of media content offerings over at least one first network topology wherein the content server will have already obtained or received a plurality of metadata records from at least one metadata record provider when the hand held communications device is used, each metadata record corresponding to at least one of the content offerings and, each metadata record containing at least two items of information that, when presented to a customer by means of a computing device, allow the customer to learn about the media content offering corresponding thereto without having to download it to the customer's computing device;
wherein a first set of instructions are stored in the memory that, when executed by the processor, cause a metadata record request to be sent from the hand held communications device to the content server via at least one second network topology so that the content server can then cause the selection of the at least one metadata record corresponding to the customer request and then filter out at least one item of information from the at least one corresponding metadata record for the purpose of lowering bandwidth requirements necessary for the content server to respond to the metadata record request of the customer;
wherein a second set of instructions are stored in the memory that, when executed by the processor, enable a determination of whether an amount of congestion on an expected transmission path from the content server to the hand held device over which the filtered metadata record is to be sent is above a certain threshold amount, thereby causing at least one additional item of information to be filtered out from the at least one metadata record for the purpose of further lowering the bandwidth requirements necessary for the content server to respond to the metadata record request of the hand held device;
wherein a third set of instructions are stored in the memory that are adapted to be executed by the processor during an interval of time of use of the hand held communications device after the content server has caused only the at least one filtered metadata record to be transmitted via at least one third network topology to the hand held communications device which sent the metadata record request thereby allowing the customer to receive the at least one filtered metadata record more quickly when the at least one second or third network topologies are congested than would be the case if the corresponding metadata record were sent to the customer without being filtered; and
wherein a fourth set of instructions are stored in the memory that are executable by the processor after the content server receives a media content offering download request from the hand held communications device and that, when executed by the processor, cause the requested media content offering to be transferred to the customer by means of at least one fourth network topology.
2. The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the at least one first, second, third and fourth network topologies comprises the internet.
3. The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the at least one first, second, third and fourth network topologies comprises a satellite network.
4. The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the at least one first, second, third and fourth network topologies comprises a network through which television programming is provided.

The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein the filtering out at least one item of information from the at least one corresponding metadata record is accomplished by reference to at least one user preference which has been recorded by the customer in the hand held communications device.
6. The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein the filtering out at least one item of information from the at least one corresponding metadata record is accomplished by reference to a home location of the customer that sent the metadata record request to the content server.
7. The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein the filtering out at least one item of information from the at least one corresponding metadata record is accomplished by reference to a current location of the customer that sent the metadata record request to the content server.
8. The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein the filtering out at least one item of information from the at least one corresponding metadata record is accomplished by reference to a type of device which issued the metadata record request.
9. The hand held communications device of claim 8 , wherein the type of device is selected from the group consisting of set top boxes, personal computers, personal digital assistants, telephones, Internet enable telephones, video telephones, smart watches, portable media devices, gaming stations, and laptop computers.
10. The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first network topology comprises a single communications network.
11. The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one second network topology comprises a single communications network.
12. The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one third network topology comprises a single communications network.
13. The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one second and third network topologies form the same communications network.
14. The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first, second, third and fourth network topologies form the same communications network.
15. The hand held communications device of claim 1 , wherein the content server obtains or receives a plurality of metadata records from only one metadata record provider when the processor executes the first instructions.
