Abstract

System and method for conveying data between vehicles includes a data generating system arranged on a first vehicle to obtain or generate information about the first vehicle or conditions around the first vehicle, a first communications system arranged on the first vehicle and coupled to the data generating system for communicating with a wireless Internet service provider (ISP) and a second communications system arranged on a second vehicle and communicating with an ISP. The first communications system enables the information obtained or generated by the data generating system to be transmitted via the Internet to the second communications system. The first and second communications systems can communicate with the same ISP or different ISPs linked to one another.

Claims (47)

1. An accident avoidance system using an infrastructure system to convey position information between vehicles, comprising:

a receiver associated with the infrastructure system for receiving vehicle position information acquired onboard position-reporting vehicles and transmitted from the position-reporting vehicles in a vicinity around the infrastructure system, the receiver being located apart from the vehicles;

a transmitter coupled to the receiver and fixed at a ground-based station for transmitting to the vehicles in a vicinity of the ground-based station at least a portion of the vehicle position information indicating locations of position reporting vehicles received by the receiver, the transmitter being located apart from the vehicles, the ground-based station being part of the infrastructure system;

an accident risk warning system for alerting an operator of a first vehicle of a risk of an accident involving the first vehicle based on the vehicle position information for the first vehicle and map data representing a roadway that the first vehicle is approaching or traveling on including edges or lane boundaries of the roadway; and

an active position determining system associated with the infrastructure system for acquiring vehicle position information for non-position-reporting vehicles in the vicinity;

wherein the transmitter fixed at the ground-based station is further configured for transmitting position information indicating locations of at least a portion of the non-position reporting vehicles acquired by the active position determining system.

2. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , further comprising a navigation display operative to display a map of the roadway indicating edges or lane boundaries of the roadway and the locations of the position reporting vehicles and the non-position reporting vehicles on the map of the roadway.

3. The accident avoidance system of claim 2 , wherein the navigation display is located onboard the first vehicle and the infrastructure system is operable for transmitting map information to the first vehicle for display on the navigation display located onboard the first vehicle.

4. The accident avoidance system of claim 3 , further comprising an accident avoidance system that determines that a risk of an accident exists involving the first vehicle and indicating the accident risk warning.

5. The accident avoidance system of claim 4 , wherein the navigation display is located onboard the first vehicle and the infrastructure system transmits the accident risk warning to the first vehicle.

6. The accident avoidance system of claim 4 , wherein the navigation display is located onboard the first vehicle and the accident risk warning is determined onboard the first vehicle.

7. The accident avoidance system of claim 4 , wherein the navigation display is located onboard the first vehicle and the accident risk warning is transmitted to the first vehicle from a second vehicle.

8. The accident avoidance system of claim 4 , wherein the accident avoidance system is further operable for determining an evasive maneuver in response to the accident risk.

9. The accident avoidance system of claim 4 , wherein the accident avoidance system is located onboard a first vehicle and operable for transmitting the evasive maneuver to a second vehicle.

10. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the active position determining system comprises a radar.

11. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the infrastructure system transmits weather information to the first vehicle.

12. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the infrastructure system transmits icing information to the first vehicle.

13. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the infrastructure system transmits road condition information to the first vehicle.

14. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the infrastructure system transmits collision avoidance information to the first vehicle.

15. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the infrastructure system transmits map update information to the first vehicle.

16. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the infrastructure system transmits traffic control information to the first vehicle.

17. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein:

the infrastructure system determines highest priority vehicle position information for the first vehicle; and

the infrastructure system transmits the highest priority vehicle position information for the first vehicle to the first vehicle.

18. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein:

the infrastructure system generates a highest priority position information message for each of a plurality of host vehicles;

each highest priority position information message contains a subset of a total information set selected for a respective host vehicle and the highest priority vehicle position information for each host vehicle includes at least the location of one or more position-reporting vehicles and the location of one or more non-position-reporting vehicles; and

the infrastructure system transmits each highest priority position information message to its respective host vehicle.

19. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the vehicles are airplanes and the map depicts an airport runway.

20. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the accident risk comprises a collision threat involving the first vehicle and another vehicle.

21. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the accident risk comprises the first vehicle deviating from a travel corridor assigned to the first vehicle.

22. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the accident risk comprises a second vehicle deviating from a travel corridor assigned to the second vehicle.

23. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the accident risk comprises a potential obstacle in a travel path of the first vehicle.

24. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the receiver is fixed at a ground-based station which is part of the infrastructure system.

25. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein the active position determining system is fixed at a ground-based station which is part of the infrastructure system.

26. The accident avoidance system of claim 1 , wherein:

for each of a plurality of host vehicles, the infrastructure system prioritizes the vehicle position information to distinguish between high priority, time-critical information of immediate relevance to operation of the host vehicle and low priority, non-time-critical information of non-immediate relevance to the operation of the host vehicle, and generates a highest priority position information message for the host vehicle including the high priority, time-critical information; and

the infrastructure system transmits each highest priority position information message to its respective host vehicle.

27. The accident avoidance system of claim 26 , wherein the infrastructure system prioritizes the vehicle position information based on the current position of each host vehicle.

28. The accident avoidance system of claim 26 , wherein the infrastructure system prioritizes the vehicle position information based on location of sources of the vehicle position information.

29. The accident avoidance system of claim 26 , wherein the infrastructure system prioritizes the vehicle position information based on identification of sources of the vehicle position information.

30. An accident avoidance system using an infrastructure system to convey position information between vehicles, comprising:

a receiver for receiving vehicle position information acquired onboard position-reporting vehicles and transmitted from the position-reporting vehicles in a vicinity around the receiver, the receiver being located apart from the vehicles;

a transmitter coupled to the receiver for transmitting to the vehicles in a vicinity of the transmitter at least a portion of the vehicle position information indicating locations of position reporting vehicles received by the receiver, the transmitter being located apart from the vehicles;
