Abstract

Described here are paranasal sinus devices for treating paranasal sinus conditions. The devices include a cavity member, ostial member, and nasal portion. One or more of the cavity member, ostial member, and nasal portion may deliver an active agent for sustained release to treat the paranasal sinus condition. Exemplary paranasal sinus conditions are sinus inflammation due to functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and rhinosinusitis.

Claims (21)

1. A fully-implantable, bioabsorbable device for treating a nasal or paranasal sinus condition comprising:

a tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end;

a first plurality of prongs attached to the tubular member at the proximal end thereof, each prong having a free end; and

a second plurality of prongs attached to the tubular member at the distal end thereof, each prong having a free end,

wherein the device has an expanded configuration and an unexpanded configuration, and wherein the first plurality of prongs expands relative to the tubular member when the device changes from the unexpanded configuration to the expanded configuration.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the first plurality of prongs are radially expandable.

3. The device of claim 2 wherein the first plurality of prongs are self-expandable.

4. The device of claim 1 further comprising one or more active agents.

5. The device of claim 4 wherein the one or more active agents comprises mometasone furoate.

6. The device of claim 4 wherein the one or more active agents comprises fluticasone propionate.

7. The device of claim 4 wherein the one or more active agents comprises triamcinolone acenotide.

8. The device of claim 1 wherein the device is biodegradable.

9. The device of claim 1 wherein the device comprises a polymer.

10. The device of claim 9 wherein the device comprises poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid).

11. The device of claim 1 wherein the plurality of prongs comprises prongs between about 1 cm and about 6 cm in length.

12. The device of claim 1 wherein the device is injection molded.

13. A fully-implantable, bioabsorbable device for treating a nasal or paranasal sinus condition comprising:

a tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end;

a first plurality of prongs having proximal and free distal ends; and

a second plurality of prongs, each prong having a free end,

wherein the proximal ends of the first plurality of prongs are attached to the tubular member at the proximal end thereof, wherein the device has an expanded configuration and an unexpanded configuration, wherein the first plurality of prongs expands relative to the tubular member when the device expands from the unexpanded configuration to the expanded configuration, wherein the free distal ends of the first plurality are spaced apart when the device is in its expanded configuration, and wherein the second plurality of prongs are attached to the tubular member at the distal end thereof.
