Abstract

A user maintains notification setting information having temporal periods capable of controlling, at least in part, the dissemination of information describing the on-line presence of the user within an instant messaging system or the geographic location of one or more mobile communications devices used by the user. The user may use multiple identities to communicate within the instant messaging system and/or with the mobile communications device or devices. The user can maintain sets of temporal periods for each of the multiple identities. Only one identity may be used at a specific time to communicate to a specific other identity, but the multiple identities of the user may be linked such that on-line presence and/or geographic location associated with one of the identities is disseminated based on the temporal periods set for one or more of the multiple identities.

Claims (50)

1. A computer-implemented method for providing notification information regarding geographical location, the method comprising:

accessing geographic information stored in a computer storage medium, the geographic information comprising a location of a mobile device that is associated with a first communications identity of a user;

receiving information associated with a second communications identity of the user, the second communications identity being linked to the first communications identity, and the information comprising a characteristic of the link between the first communications identity and the second communications identity;

providing the geographic information associated with the first communications identity to the second communications identity;

selecting one of (i) notification setting information of the first communications identity, or (ii) notification setting information of the second communications identity, based on the characteristic of the link, the selected notification setting information being associated with the linked first and second communications identities; and

transmitting a portion of the geographic information to at least one communications identity of a participant list associated with the second communications identity, based on the selected notification setting information.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the participant list identifies communications identities designated by the user.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the participant list comprises a participant list of an instant messaging system.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the participant list comprises a contact list of a mobile device.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the mobile device is a device capable of receiving and transmitting voice communications.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the mobile device is a mobile phone.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the mobile device is further capable of receiving and transmitting data communications.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the geographic information comprises:

determining a geographic location of the second communications identity of the user based on the location of the mobile device associated with the first communications identity.

9. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having embodied thereon a computer program configured to, when executed, provide notification information regarding geographical location, the medium comprising one or more code segments configured to:

access geographic information stored in a computer storage medium, the geographic information comprising a location of a mobile device that is associated with a first communications identity of a user;

receive information associated with a second communications identity of the user, the second communications identity being linked to the first communications identity, and the information comprising a characteristic of the link between the first and second communications identities;

provide the geographic information associated with the first communications identity to the second communications identity;

select one of (i) notification setting information of the first communications identity, or (ii) notification setting information of the second communications identity, based on the characteristic of the link, the selected notification setting information being associated with the linked first and second communications identities; and

transmit a portion of the geographic information to at least one communications identity of a participant list associated with the second communications identity, based on the selected notification setting information.

10. The medium of claim 9 , wherein the participant list identifies communications identities designated by the user that is associated with the second communication identity.

11. The medium of claim 9 , wherein the participant list comprises a participant list of an instant messaging system.

12. The medium of claim 9 , wherein the participant list comprises a contact list of a mobile device.

13. The medium of claim 12 , wherein the mobile device is a device capable of receiving and transmitting voice communications.

14. The medium of claim 12 , wherein the mobile device is a mobile phone.

15. The medium of claim 12 , wherein the mobile device is further capable of receiving and transmitting data communications.

16. The medium of claim 9 , wherein the one or more code segments configured to provide geographic information are further configured to:

determine a geographic location of the second communications identity of the user based on the location of the mobile device associated with the first communications identity.

17. A computer-based system for providing notification information regarding geographical location, the system comprising a processor connected to a storage device and one or more input/output devices, wherein the processor is configured to:

access geographic information stored in a computer storage medium, the geographic information comprising a location of a mobile device that is associated with a first communications identity of a user;

receive information associated with a second communications identity of the user, the second communications identity being linked to the first communications identity, and the information comprising a characteristic of the link between the first and second communications identities;

provide the geographic information associated with the first communications identity to the second communications identity;

select one of (i) notification setting information of the first communications identity, or (ii) notification setting information of the second communications identity, based on the characteristic of the link the selected notification setting information being associated with the linked first and second communications identities; and

transmit a portion of the geographic information to at least one communications identity of a participant list associated with the second communications identity, based on the selected notification setting information.

18. A tangible computer-based system for providing notification information regarding geographical location, the system comprising:

means for accessing geographic information stored in a non-transitory computer storage medium, the geographic information comprising a location of a mobile device that is associated with a first communications identity of a user;

means for receiving information associated with a second communications identity of the user, the second communications identity being linked to the first communications identity, and the information comprising a characteristic of the link between the first and second communications identities;

means for providing the geographic information associated with the first communications identity to the second communications identity;

means for selecting one of (i) notification setting information of the first communications identity, or (ii) notification setting information of the second communications identity, based on the characteristic of the link, the selected notification setting information being associated with the linked first and second communications identities; and

means for transmitting a portion of the geographic information to at least one communications identity of a participant list associated with the second communications identity, based on the selected notification setting information.

19. A computer-implemented method for providing notification information regarding geographical location, the method comprising:

accessing geographic information stored in a computer storage medium, the geographic information comprising a location associated with a first communications identity of a user;

receiving information associated with a second communications identity of the user, the information indicating a link between the first communications identity and the second communications identity;

providing the geographic information associated with the first communications identity to the second communications identity;

selecting notification setting information of the first communications identity as notification setting information for the linked first and second communications identities; and

transmitting a portion of the geographic information to at least one communications identity of a participant list associated with the second communications identity, based on the notification setting information of the linked first and second communications identities.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the link between the first communications identity and the second communications identity comprises a bi-directional link.

21. The method of claim 19 , wherein the link between the first communications identity and the second communications identity comprises one of a one-way link or an indirect link.
