Abstract

A catheter configured for delivering an agent to a patient's vessel wall is described. The catheter includes an inflatable balloon substantially covered by a expandable cage such that when the inflatable balloon is inflated the expandable cage substantially surrounds an outer surface of the inflated balloon. The inflatable balloon is configured to be deployed within a lumen against a lumen wall and separated from the lumen wall by the expandable cage in an expanded state, and is adapted to provide an agent delivery to a treatment site, and the expandable cage is further collapsible and is removable from said lumen.

Claims (11)

1. An agent delivery assembly comprising:

an inflatable balloon substantially covered by a self-expandable cage such that when the inflatable balloon is inflated the self-expandable cage substantially surrounds an outer surface of the inflatable balloon, wherein the inflatable balloon is configured to be deployed within a lumen against a lumen wall and separated from the lumen wall by the self-expandable cage and is adapted to isolate a treatment site for an agent to be delivered thereto, and wherein the self-expandable cage is collapsible and is removable from the lumen; and

a catheter to deliver the self-expandable cage and the inflatable balloon, the catheter comprising a delivery sheath to constrain and retract the self-expandable cage and an inner member whereto the inflatable balloon and the self-expandable cage attach, the inner member having perfusion openings to allow fluid flow around the inflatable balloon.

2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the self-expandable cage is any one of a self-expandable stent-like structure, or an embolic protection cage.

3. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the inflatable balloon is configured to be inflated with a pressure less than 2 atmospheric pressure (atm).

4. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the inflatable balloon is attached to the self-expandable cage such that when the self-expandable cage is expanded, the inflatable balloon is pulled open or inflated.

5. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the inflatable balloon includes openings to allow an agent to elute from inside the inflatable balloon toward the treatment site.

6. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the delivery sheath is adapted to deploy the self-expandable cage and re-collapse the self-expandable cage.

7. An agent delivery assembly comprising:

an inflatable balloon substantially covered by a self-expandable cage such that when the inflatable balloon is inflated the self-expandable cage substantially surrounds an outer surface of the inflatable balloon, wherein the inflatable balloon is configured to be deployed within a lumen against a lumen wall and separated from the lumen wall by the self-expandable cage and is adapted to isolate a treatment site for an agent to be delivered thereto, wherein the inflatable balloon is tapered from a distal end toward a proximal end of the inflatable balloon, wherein the distal end of the inflatable balloon is configured to seal off fluid flow past the distal end when the inflatable balloon is inflated, wherein the agent is delivered to a space between the distal end and the proximal end of the inflatable balloon, and wherein the self-expandable cage is further collapsible and is removable from the lumen.

8. The assembly of claim 7 wherein the inflatable balloon is adapted to be independently inflated and capable of being intermittently inflated and deflated.
