Abstract

A backbone network, comprising a first switch comprising a first port configured to communicate a data stream via an Ethernet interface, and a second port configured to communicate the data stream via a SONET/SDH interface, and a second switch comprising a third port configured to receive the data stream from the first switch via the Ethernet interface, wherein the first switch and the second switch are synchronized.

Claims (36)

1. A network component comprising:

a first port configured to communicate a first data stream over an Ethernet interface, the first data stream comprising a first Ethernet packet data and a first time division multiplexed data;

a second port configured to communicate a second data stream over a SONET/SDH interface, the second data stream comprising a second Ethernet packet data and a second time division multiplexed data;

a switching fabric coupled to the first port and the second port and configured to communicate at least some of the first data stream and the second data stream between the first port and the second port,

wherein the Ethernet packet data and the time division multiplexed data are not encapsulated.

2. The network component of claim 1 , wherein the first time division multiplexed data is the same as the second time division multiplexed data.

3. The network component of claim 1 , wherein the switching fabric comprises a first switching fabric configured to switch the first time division multiplexed data and the second time division multiplexed data, and a second switch fabric configured to switch the first Ethernet packet data and the second Ethernet packet data.

4. The network component of claim 1 , wherein the first port is configured to receive the first data stream over the Ethernet interface and the second port is configured to send the second data stream over the SONET/SDH interface.

5. The network component of claim 1 , wherein the second port is configured to receive the first data stream over the SONET/SDH interface and the first port is configured to send the second data stream over the Ethernet interface.

6. The network component of claim 1 , further comprising a clock, wherein the clock is frequency-synchronized and phase-aligned to a clock in a device in communication with the network component through the Ethernet interface or the SONET/SDH interface.

7. The network component of claim 1 , wherein the switching fabric comprises at least two of: a SONET/SDH switch, a virtual tributary switch, a column switch and an Ethernet switch.

8. The network component of claim 7 , further comprising a TDM line card and an Ethernet line card, and wherein the TDM line card and the Ethernet line card are coupled to the switching fabric.

9. The network component of claim 8 , further comprising an H-TDM line card, wherein the H-TDM line card communicates using an overlay synchronous timeslot scheme.

10. The network component of claim 9 , wherein the overlay synchronous timeslot scheme comprises a timeslot map.

11. The network component of claim 10 , wherein the timeslot map comprises locations of data types within a payload.

12. A method comprising:

communicating, by a first port of a network device, a first data stream over an Ethernet interface, the first data stream comprising a first Ethernet packet data and a first time division multiplexed data;

communicating, by a second port of the network device, a second data stream over a SONET/SDH interface, the second data stream comprising a second Ethernet packet data and a second time division multiplexed data;

communicating, by a switching fabric coupled to the first port and the second port, at least some of the first data stream and the second data stream between the first port and the second port,

wherein the Ethernet packet data and the time division multiplexed data are not encapsulated.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first time division multiplexed data is the same as the second time division multiplexed data.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the switching fabric comprises a first switching fabric and a second switching fabric.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

switching, by the first switching fabric, the first time division multiplexed data and the second time division multiplexed data; and

switching, by the second switch fabric, the first Ethernet packet data and the second Ethernet packet data.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

receiving, at the first port, the first data stream over the Ethernet interface; and

sending, by the second port, the second data stream over the SONET/SDH interface.

17. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

receiving, at the second port, the first data stream over the SONET/SDH interface; and

sending, by the first port, the second data stream over the Ethernet interface.

18. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

frequency-synchronizing a first clock of the network device with a second clock of a network component; and

phase-aligning the first clock with the second clock.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the frequency-synchronizing and the phase-aligning are accomplished through the Ethernet interface.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the frequency-synchronizing and the phase-aligning are accomplished through the SONET/SDH interface.
