Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a telecommunications jack including a housing having a port for receiving a plug. The jack also includes a plurality of contact springs adapted to make electrical contact with the plug when the plug is inserted into the port of the housing, and a plurality of wire termination contacts for terminating wires to the jack. The jack further includes a circuit board that electrically connects the contact springs to the wire termination contacts. The circuit board includes a multi-zone crosstalk compensation arrangement for reducing crosstalk at the jack.

Claims (61)

1. A telecommunications device adapted to receive a plug, the telecommunications device having a compensation arrangement that compensates for cross talk generated at the plug, the telecommunications device comprising:

a housing defining a port for receiving the plug;

first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth consecutively arranged contact springs adapted to make electrical contact with the plug when the plug is inserted into the port of the housing;

first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts for terminating wires to the device;

a circuit board including first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth conductive paths that respectively electrically connect the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth contact springs to the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts, wherein the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth conductive paths form a plurality of differential pairs, the fourth and fifth conductive paths forming one of the plurality of differential pairs; and

the circuit board also including first and second capacitor members for providing a first capacitive coupling applied between and therefore electrically connected to both the fourth and fifth conductive paths, the first capacitive coupling being applied to and therefore electrically connected to both the fourth and fifth conductive paths adjacent the fourth and fifth wire termination contacts.

2. The telecommunications device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second capacitor members include first and second opposing capacitor plates.

3. The telecommunications device of claim 1 , wherein the first capacitive coupling is applied at the fourth and fifth wire termination contacts.

The telecommunications device of claim 1 , wherein the device includes first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth circuits that respectively include the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth contact springs, the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts, and the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth conductive paths, and wherein the device further comprises a cross-talk compensation arrangement that applies a second capacitive coupling between the fourth and sixth circuits and that applies a third capacitive coupling between the third and fifth circuits.

5. The telecommunications device of claim 4 , wherein the second and third capacitive couplings of the cross-talk compensation arrangement are provided by adjacent capacitor members provided on the circuit board.

6. The telecommunications device of claim 5 , wherein the adjacent capacitor members provide cross-talk compensation to the fourth and fifth circuits at locations closer to the fourth and fifth contact springs than the fourth and fifth wire termination contacts.

7. The telecommunications device of claim 4 , wherein the cross-talk compensation arrangement provides cross-talk compensation to the fourth and fifth circuits at locations closer to the fourth and fifth contact springs than the fourth and fifth wire termination contacts.

8. The telecommunications device of claim 4 , wherein cross-talk compensation arrangement applies a fourth capacitive coupling between the third and fourth conductive paths and applies a fifth capacitive coupling between the fifth and sixth conductive paths.

9. The telecommunications device of claim 8 , wherein the capacitive couplings of the cross-talk compensation arrangement are applied at locations closer to the contact springs than the wire termination contacts.

10. The telecommunications device of claim 8 , wherein the first capacitive coupling is spaced a sufficient distance away from the cross-talk compensation arrangement for the first capacitive coupling to reduce return loss corresponding to the fourth and fifth conductive paths.

11. A telecommunications device adapted to receive a plug, the telecommunications device having a compensation arrangement that compensates for cross talk generated at the plug, the telecommunications device comprising:

a housing defining a port for receiving the plug;

first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth consecutively arranged contact springs adapted to make electrical contact with the plug when the plug is inserted into the port of the housing;

first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts for terminating wires to the device;

a circuit board including first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth conductive paths that respectively electrically connect the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth contact springs to the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts, wherein the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth conductive paths form a plurality of differential pairs, the third and sixth conductive paths forming one of the plurality of differential pairs; and

the circuit board also including first and second capacitor members for providing a first capacitive coupling applied between and therefore electrically connected to both the third and sixth conductive paths, the first capacitive coupling being applied to and therefore electrically connected to both the third and sixth conductive paths adjacent the third and sixth wire termination contacts.

12. The telecommunications device of claim 11 , wherein the first and second capacitor members include first and second opposing capacitor plates.

13. The telecommunications device of claim 11 , wherein the first capacitive coupling is applied at the third and sixth wire termination contacts.

The telecommunications device of claim 11 , wherein the device includes first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth circuits that respectively include the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth contact springs, the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts, and the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth conductive paths, and wherein the device further comprises a cross-talk compensation arrangement that applies a second capacitive coupling between the fourth and sixth circuits and that applies a third capacitive coupling between the third and fifth circuits.

15. The telecommunications device of claim 14 , wherein the second and third capacitive couplings of the cross-talk compensation arrangement are provided by adjacent capacitor members provided on the circuit board.

16. The telecommunications device of claim 15 , wherein the adjacent capacitor members provide cross-talk compensation to the third and sixth circuits at locations closer to the third and sixth contact springs than the third and sixth wire termination contacts.

17. The telecommunications device of claim 14 , wherein the cross-talk compensation arrangement provides cross-talk compensation to the third and sixth circuits at locations closer to the third and sixth contact springs than the third and sixth wire termination contacts.

The telecommunications device of claim 14 , wherein cross-talk compensation arrangement applies wherein cross-talk compensation arrangement applies a fourth capacitive coupling between the third and fourth conductive paths and applies a fifth capacitive coupling between the fifth and sixth conductive paths.

19. The telecommunications device of claim 18 , wherein the capacitive couplings of the cross-talk compensation arrangement are applied at locations closer to the contact springs than the wire termination contacts.

20. The telecommunications device of claim 18 , wherein the first capacitive coupling is spaced a sufficient distance away from the cross-talk compensation arrangement for the first capacitive coupling to reduce return loss corresponding to the third and sixth conductive paths.

21. A telecommunications device adapted to receive a plug, the telecommunications device having a compensation arrangement that compensates for cross talk generated at the plug, the telecommunications device comprising:

a housing defining a port for receiving the plug;

first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth consecutively arranged contact springs adapted to make electrical contact with the plug when the plug is inserted into the port of the housing;

first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts for terminating wires to the device;

a circuit board including first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth conductive paths that respectively electrically connect the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth contact springs to the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts, wherein the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth conductive paths form a plurality of differential pairs, the first and second conductive paths forming a first differential pair, the third and sixth conductive paths forming a second differential pair, the fourth and fifth conductive paths forming a third differential pair, and the seventh and eighth conductive paths forming a fourth differential pair;

the device including first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth circuits that respectively include the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth contact springs, the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts, and the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth conductive paths;

the device including a cross-talk compensation arrangement including one or more cross-talk compensating capacitive couplings applied between and therefore electrically connected to both the fourth and sixth circuits and one or more cross-talk compensating capacitive couplings applied between and therefore electrically connected to both the third and fifth circuits;

the device including a return loss compensating capacitive coupling applied between and therefore electrically connected to both of at least one of the: a) fourth and fifth circuits; and b) the third and sixth circuits; and

the return loss compensating capacitive coupling being applied far enough away from the cross-talk compensation arrangement to reduce return loss.

22. A telecommunications device adapted to receive a plug, the telecommunications device having a compensation arrangement that compensates for cross talk generated at the plug, the telecommunications device comprising:

a housing defining a port for receiving the plug;

first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth consecutively arranged contact springs adapted to make electrical contact with the plug when the plug is inserted into the port of the housing;

first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts for terminating wires to the device;

a circuit board including first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth conductive paths that respectively electrically connect the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth contact springs to the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts, wherein the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth conductive paths form a plurality of differential pairs, the first and second conductive paths forming a first differential pair, the third and sixth conductive paths forming a second differential pair, the fourth and fifth conductive paths forming a third differential pair, and the seventh and eighth conductive paths forming a fourth differential pair;

the device including first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth circuits that respectively include the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth contact springs, the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts, and the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth conductive paths;

the device including a cross-talk compensation arrangement including one or more cross-talk compensating capacitive couplings applied between and therefore electrically connected to both the fourth and sixth circuits and one or more cross-talk compensating capacitive couplings applied between and therefore electrically connected to both the third and fifth circuits;

the device including a return loss compensating capacitive coupling applied between and therefore electrically connected to both of selected circuits, the selected circuits including at least one of the: a) fourth and fifth circuits; and b) the third and sixth conductive circuits; and

the return loss compensating capacitive coupling being applied between and therefore electrically connected to both of the selected circuits at locations closer to the wire termination contacts than to the contact springs.

23. A telecommunications device comprising:

a housing defining a port for receiving a plug;

a plurality of contact springs adapted to make electrical contact with the plug when the plug is inserted into the port of the housing;

a plurality of wire termination contacts for terminating wires to the device;

a circuit board including conductive paths that form a plurality of differential pair of circuits to electrically connect the contact springs to the wire termination contacts;

the device including a plurality of circuits with each circuit including one of the contact springs, one of the wire termination contacts and one of the conductive paths, the plurality of circuits including a pair of circuits for communication of a differential signal;

the device including a cross-talk compensation arrangement having a capacitive coupling applied to one of the circuits of the pair of the circuits; and

the device including a return loss compensating capacitance applied between and therefore electrically connected to both of the circuits of the pair of circuits.

24. The telecommunications device of claim 23 , wherein the return loss compensating capacitance is applied to the pair of circuits adjacent the wire termination contacts.

25. The telecommunications device of claim 23 , wherein the return loss compensating capacitance is applied to the pair of circuits at the wire termination contacts.

26. The telecommunications device of claim 23 , wherein the return loss compensating capacitance is applied to the pair of circuits at a location closer to the wire termination contacts than the contact springs.

27. The telecommunications device of claim 26 , wherein the return loss compensating capacitance is applied between and therefore electrically connected to both of the fourth and fifth conductive paths adjacent the fourth and fifth wire termination contacts.

28. The telecommunications device of claim 26 , wherein the return loss compensating capacitance is applied between and therefore electrically connected to both of the third and sixth conductive paths adjacent the third and sixth wire termination contacts.
