Abstract

A manifold assembly for use in a medical waste collection device to direct fluid into the medical waste collection device while filtering material from the fluid. The assembly includes a manifold housing having a bottom and a wall extending upwardly from the bottom about a first axis, with an outlet port disposed on the manifold housing. A support structure disposed on the bottom has a filter support surface and defines a plurality of open spaces between the filter support surface and the bottom. A manifold cap having a unitary skirt is connected to the manifold housing to define a chamber therebetween, and has an intake port disposed thereon to direct the fluid into the chamber. A filter is supported by the filter support surface to filter the material from the fluid, the periphery of the filter positioned between the skirt and the support structure to prevent fluid received in the chamber from bypassing the filter as the fluid moves from the chamber to the outlet port.

Claims (20)

1. A manifold assembly for use in a medical waste collection device to direct fluid into the medical waste collection device while filtering material from the fluid, said assembly comprising:

a manifold housing having a bottom and a wall extending upwardly from said bottom about a first axis;

a support structure disposed on said bottom and having a filter support surface spaced from said bottom to define a plurality of open spaces between said filter support surface and said bottom, said support structure having a ring defining an outer surface facing radially outward towards said wall and spaced from said wall;

at least one filter supported by said filter support surface to filter the material from the fluid, said at least one filter having a periphery;

a manifold cap connected to said manifold housing to define a chamber therebetween;

an intake port disposed on said manifold cap to direct the fluid into said chamber;

an outlet port disposed on said manifold housing; and

a skirt unitary with said cap and having a lower edge and an inner surface, said periphery of said at least one filter positioned beneath said lower edge of said skirt and radially outward from said outer surface of said support structure.

2. The manifold assembly of claim 1 , wherein a groove is defined between said ring of said support structure and said wall, said lower edge of said skirt received in said groove.

3. The manifold assembly of claim 1 wherein said periphery of said filter is compressed by said lower edge of said skirt to secure said filter in place.

4. The manifold assembly of claim 2 , wherein said groove is annular, and said lower edge of said skirt is circumferentially continuous.

5. The manifold assembly of claim 1 , wherein said support structure is unitary with said manifold housing.

6. The manifold assembly of claim 1 , wherein said support structure includes a plurality of spaced support members extending laterally relative to said first axis, one of said plurality of open spaces defined between two said support members.

7. The manifold assembly of claim 6 , wherein said plurality of spaced support members comprises a plurality of spokes extending radially toward said wall.

8. The manifold assembly of claim 6 , wherein at least one of said support members intersects said first axis.

9. The manifold assembly of claim 8 , wherein another of said support members is spaced from said first axis.

10. The manifold assembly of claim 6 , wherein two or more said support members are interconnected within said ring of said support structure.

11. The manifold assembly of claim 6 , wherein said ring is an outer ring and said support structure comprises an inner support ring disposed within said outer ring and surrounding said first axis, at least one of said plurality of spaced support members extending between portions of said inner support ring located on opposite sides of said first axis.

12. The manifold assembly of claim 11 , wherein said inner support ring is substantially centered on said first axis.

13. The manifold assembly of claim 12 , wherein said inner support ring is substantially circular, and said plurality of spaced support members extend radially relative to said first axis toward said outer ring of said support structure.
