Abstract

A method of displaying and navigating information using a hierarchical, spring loaded DHTML menu system that adjusts to fit the boundaries of a resizable, container. A set of standard HTML table row elements, having a hierarchical dependency, is consistently displayed as a web-page, under reasonable resizing. This is done using a strut row that produces the largest width requirement when the table structure is resizing to occupy a small width. Only the current row elements and the strut element are required in calculating table resizing to ensure that whichever data elements are displayed when a web-page resizing occurs, the browser auto-layout algorithm calculations will result in a resize attributes that enables all other row elements of that menu to be accommodated by the newly determined table width. As the row elements may themselves be table structures, nested menus of information may be displayed and navigated.

Claims (10)

1. A menu navigation system, comprising:

a top and a bottom submenu displayed as contiguous regions on a display screen;

a quad controller comprising a top and a bottom forward-selector region and a top and a bottom back-selector region, and wherein said top selector regions are both located overlaid over a portion of said top submenu, said bottom backward selector regions are both located overlaid over a portion of said bottom submenu, and all selector regions are displayed as contiguous regions on a display screen;

said menu navigation system further comprising software coded such that the following actions occur dependent on which of said quad controller's selector regions are active and selected:

selection of an active top back-selector region causes a parent submenu to be displayed over said bottom submenu while selection of an active bottom back-selector region causes said parent submenu to be displayed over said top submenu; and

selection of an active top forward-selector region causes a child submenu to be displayed over said bottom submenu while selection of an active bottom forward-selector region causes said child submenu to be displayed over said top submenu.

2. The menu navigation system of claim 1 wherein said parent submenu is the submenu that immediately proceeds, in a menu hierarchy, the submenu over which said active back selector is located.

3. The menu navigation system of claim 2 wherein said child submenu is the submenu that immediately follows, in said menu hierarchy, the submenu over which said active back selector is located.

4. The menu navigation system of claim 3 wherein said selector regions are made active in mutually exclusive diagonal pairs.

5. The menu navigation system of claim 4 wherein said mutually exclusive diagonal pairs are toggled after the action of a selection is completed.
