Abstract

A method and apparatus for controlling an active time period during a Discontinuous Reception (DRX) operation in a User Equipment (UE) in a mobile communication system. The method includes starting, in the UE, a first timer to monitor control data via a shared control channel, the control data being associated with user data to be transmitted; and starting, in the UE, a second timer, when the control data indicating a new transmission of associated user data is received via the shared control channel while the first timer is running, or restarting, in the UE, the second timer, when the control data indicating a new transmission of associated user data is received via the shared control channel while the second timer is running.

Claims (37)

1. A method for controlling an active time period during a Discontinuous Reception (DRX) operation in a User Equipment (UE) in a mobile communication system, comprising:

starting, in the UE, a first timer to monitor control data via a shared control channel, the control data being associated with user data to be transmitted; and

starting, in the UE, a second timer, when the control data indicating a new transmission of associated user data is received via the shared control channel while the first timer is running, or

restarting, in the UE, the second timer, when the control data indicating a new transmission of associated user data is received via the shared control channel while the second timer is running.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein a duration for the first timer and a duration for the second timer are received from a Node B.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving starting information from a Node B to determine when to start the first timer.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising monitoring the control data via the shared control channel while at least one of the first timer and the second timer is running.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising stopping at least one of the first timer and the second timer, if a control signal indicates that the at least one of the first timer and the second timer are to be stopped.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the shared control channel includes a Physical Downlink control channel (PDCCH).

7. An apparatus for controlling an active time period during a Discontinuous Reception (DRX) operation in a User Equipment (UE) in a mobile communication system, comprising:

a DRX controller for starting, in the UE, a first timer to monitor control data via a shared control channel, the control data being associated with user data to be transmitted, and for starting, in the UE, a second timer, when control data indicating a new transmission of associated user data is received via the shared control channel while the first timer is running, or for restarting, in the UE, the second timer, when the control data indicating a new transmission of associated user data is received via the shared control channel while the second timer is running.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the DRX controller receives a duration for the first timer and a duration for the second timer from a Node B.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the DRX controller receives starting information from a Node B to determine when to start the first timer.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the DRX controller monitors the control data via the shared control channel while at least one of the first timer and the second timer is running.

11. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the DRX controller stops at least one of the first timer and the second timer, if a control signal indicates that the at least one of the first timer and the second timer are to be stopped.

12. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the shared control channel comprises a Physical Downlink control channel (PDCCH).

13. A method for transmitting configuration information in a Node B to control an active time period by a User Equipment (UE) during a Discontinuous Reception (DRX) operation in a mobile communication system, comprising:

transmitting, in the Node B, configuration information comprising information about a DRX cycle length, information for deriving the starting position of an active period, information about a minimum active period length, and information about an active period end interval to a User Equipment (UE),

wherein the UE performs the following steps;

starting, in the UE, a first timer to monitor control data via a shared control channel, the control data being associated with user data to be transmitted; and

starting, in the UE, a second timer, when the control data indicating a new transmission of associated user data is received via the shared control channel while the first timer is running, or

restarting, in the UE, the second timer, when the control data indicating a new transmission of associated user data is received via the shared control channel while the second timer is running,

wherein a duration for the first timer and a duration for the second timer is determined based on the configuration information.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising monitoring the control data via the shared control channel while at least one of the first timer and the second timer is running.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising stopping at least one of the first timer and the second timer, if a control signal indicates that the at least one of the first timer and the second timer are to be stopped.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the shared control channel includes a Physical Downlink control channel (PDCCH).

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the duration for the second timer is determined based on the information about the active period end interval.

18. An apparatus for transmitting configuration information in a Node B to control an active time period by a User Equipment (UE) during a Discontinuous Reception (DRX) operation in a mobile communication system, comprising:

a transmitter for transmitting, in the Node B, configuration information comprising information about a DRX cycle length, information for deriving the starting position of an active period, information about a minimum active period length, and information about an active period end interval to a User Equipment (UE),

wherein the UE performs the following steps;

starting, in the UE, a first timer to monitor control data via a shared control channel, the control data being associated with user data to be transmitted; and

starting, in the UE, a second timer, when the control data indicating a new transmission of associated user data is received via the shared control channel while the first timer is running, or

restarting, in the UE, the second timer, when the control data indicating a new transmission of associated user data is received via the shared control channel while the second timer is running,

wherein a duration for the first timer and a duration for the second timer is determined based on the configuration information.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the UE monitors the control data via the shared control channel while at least one of the first timer and the second timer is running.

20. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the UE stops at least one of the first timer and the second timer, if a control signal indicates that the at least one of the first timer and the second timer are to be stopped.

21. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the duration for the second timer is determined based on the information about the active period end interval.
