Abstract

An electrophotographic image forming apparatus includes a process cartridge which is mounted on a pull-out type cartridge tray to enable front access. The electrophotographic image forming apparatus includes an urging unit for urging and moving the cartridge tray toward a front of a main assembly of the apparatus and a clocking member for locking the cartridge tray in a proper position so that the cartridge tray is returned back to an outside position of the apparatus when the cartridge tray is pushed to the proper position.

Claims (23)

1. An electrophotographic image forming apparatus comprising:

a tray movable between a pull-out position in which said tray is outside of a main assembly of said apparatus and a push-in position in which said tray is inside of the main assembly of said apparatus, said tray including a mounting portion configured and positioned to detachably mount a cartridge in the pull-out position;

an urging member configured and positioned to urge said tray from the push-in position toward the pull-out position; and

wherein, when said tray is moved from the pull-out position to the push-in position, said urging member contacts said tray to apply an urging force for urging said tray in a direction toward the pull-out position.

2. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said tray includes a portion to be urged by said urging member, said portion to be urged being provided upstream of said tray with respect to the pull-out position of said tray.

3. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the main assembly of the apparatus includes (i) an opening through which said tray passes when said tray moves from the push-in position to the pull-out position, and (ii) a door capable of closing the opening in a state in which said tray is located in the push-in position.

4. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said cartridge includes a developer carrying member configured and positioned to carry the developer in order to develop a latent image formed on an electrophotographic photosensitive member.

5. An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein said cartridge includes said electrophotographic photosensitive member.

6. An apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the main assembly of said apparatus includes a transfer member configured and positioned to transfer a developer image formed on said electrophotographic photosensitive member,

wherein said tray is located in a transfer contact position in which said electrophotographic photosensitive member and said transfer member contact each other and a transfer separation position, as the push-in position, in which said electrophotographic photosensitive member and said transfer member are separated from each other, and

wherein said tray is moved from the transfer contact position to the transfer separation position by opening of a door.

7. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein a moving direction of said tray in which said tray moves between the push-in position and the pull-out position is perpendicular to a longitudinal direction of said cartridge.

8. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein a plurality of cartridges are mountable to said mounting portion.

9. An apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein said pull-out position is a position where the plurality of cartridges are detachably mountable to said tray, and

wherein during movement of said tray from the pull-out position to the push-in position, said urging member contacts said tray to apply an urging force for urging said tray in the direction toward the pull-out position.

10. An apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a regulating member configured and positioned to regulate movement of said tray toward the pull-out position by engagement thereof with the main assembly of said apparatus when said tray is located in the push-in position.

11. An apparatus according to claim 10 , wherein said regulating member is provided to said tray,

wherein a portion to be engaged is provided to the main assembly of the apparatus, and

wherein said regulating member is engaged with said portion to be engaged in the regulating position in the state in which said tray is located in the push-in position to regulate movement of said tray.

12. An apparatus according to claim 11 , further comprising an inclined portion for facilitating engagement between said regulating member and said portion to be engaged during movement of said tray from the pull-out position to the push-in position,

wherein said inclined portion is provided on at least one of said regulating member and said portion to be engaged.

13. An apparatus according to claim 10 , further comprising a releasing portion for releasing regulation by said regulating member in a state in which said tray is located in the push-in position.

14. An apparatus according to claim 10 , wherein said regulating member is provided downstream of said tray with respect to the pull-out position of said tray.
