Abstract

An organic light emitting diode (OLED) display and a method of manufacturing the same are provided. The OLED display includes: a display panel assembly including a first substrate having a display area and a mounting area, a second substrate coupled to the display area of the first substrate, and an integrated circuit chip mounted in the mounting area of the first substrate; a cover window disposed opposite the second substrate and the integrated circuit chip and covering the display panel assembly; and an adhesive layer which fills up a space between the second substrate and the cover window, and a space between the mounting area of the first substrate and the cover window.

Claims (40)

1. An organic light emitting diode (OLED) display device, comprising:

a display panel assembly comprising a first substrate having a display area and a mounting area, a second substrate coupled to the display area of the first substrate, and an integrated circuit chip mounted in the mounting area of the first substrate, the second substrate not being arranged over the integrated circuit chip;

a cover window arranged opposite the second substrate and the integrated circuit chip, and entirely covering the display panel assembly, the cover member being comprised of a transparent material selected from a group consisting of glass and plastic; and

an adhesive layer which fills a space between the second substrate and the cover window, and a space between the mounting area of the first substrate and the cover window, wherein the cover window comprises a light transmitting portion corresponding to a central portion of the display area and a light blocking portion corresponding to an edge of the display area and an entirety of the mounting area.

2. The OLED display device of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer comprises an acryl-based resin and covers the integrated circuit chip.

3. The OLED display device of claim 1 , further comprising a support member comprised of a metal to receive and support the display panel assembly; and

wherein the support member comprises a bottom portion formed in parallel with the first substrate, and a plurality of sidewalls which extend from the bottom portion and which covers side surfaces of the first substrate and the second substrate.

4. An organic light emitting diode (OLED) display device, comprising:

a display panel assembly comprising a first substrate having a display area and a mounting area, a second substrate coupled to the display area of the first substrate, and an integrated circuit chip mounted in the mounting area of the first substrate;

a cover window disposed opposite the second substrate and the integrated circuit chip, and covering the display panel assembly;

an adhesive layer which fills a space between the second substrate and the cover window, and a space between the mounting area of the first substrate and the cover window; and

a support member comprised of a metal to receive and support the display panel assembly; and

wherein the support member comprises a bottom portion formed in parallel with the first substrate, and a plurality of sidewalls which extend from the bottom portion and which covers side surfaces of the first substrate and the second substrate, wherein the sidewalls are spaced-apart by a predetermined distance from edges of the first substrate and the second substrate; and

wherein the adhesive layer is formed by filling up a space between the sidewalls and edges of the first substrate and the second substrate.

5. The OLED display device of claim 4 , wherein the predetermined distance is greater than 200 μm.

6. The OLED display device of claim 1 , comprised of the cover window being coupled to the display panel assembly with one surface of the cover window bearing the adhesive layer positioned opposite to the second substrate and the integrated circuit chip.

7. The OLED display device of claim 1 , the display panel assembly further comprising a polarizing plate attached to the second substrate, the adhesive layer being arranged between the cover window and the polarizing plate.

8. The OLED display device of claim 1 , the second substrate being coupled to the first substrate by a sealant arranged along an edge of the second substrate.

9. The OLED display device of claim 1 , the display area of the first substrate includes a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix form.

10. The OLED display device of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of light emitting elements and a plurality of driving circuits are arranged between the first substrate and the second substrate at a location corresponding to the display area of the first substrate.

11. The OLED display device of claim 10 , each of the plurality of light emitting elements comprises:

an anode;

an organic emission layer arranged on the anode; and

a cathode arranged on the organic emission layer.

12. The OLED display device of claim 10 , each of the driving circuits includes a thin film transistor.

13. The OLED display device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a support member comprised of a metal to receive and support the display panel assembly, the support member comprises a bottom portion arranged in parallel with the first substrate, and a plurality of sidewalls which extend from the bottom portion and which covers side surfaces of the first substrate and the second substrate;

a printed circuit board arranged on a rear side of the support member; and

a flexible printed circuit board wrapped around an edge of one of the sidewalls of the support member, the flexible printed circuit board electrically connecting the printed circuit board to the mounting area of the first substrate.

14. The OLED display device of claim 3 , the support member being produced by a deep drawing process.

15. The OLED display device of claim 3 , the support member being comprised of a metal selected from a group consisting of stainless steel, cold rolling steel, aluminum, aluminum alloy, nickel alloy, magnesium and magnesium alloy.

16. An organic light emitting diode (OLED) display device, comprising:

a display panel assembly comprising a first substrate having a display area and a mounting area, a second substrate coupled to the display area of the first substrate, a plurality of light-emitting elements and a plurality of driving circuits arranged between the first substrate and the second substrate at a location that corresponds to the display area of the first substrate, and an integrated circuit chip arranged on the mounting area of the first substrate and being spaced-apart from the second substrate;

a cover window covering the second substrate and the mounting area of the first substrate;

an adhesive layer arranged between the cover window and the second substrate of the display panel assembly, arranged between the cover window and the mounting area of the first substrate; and

a support member comprised of a metal to receive and support the display panel assembly, the support member comprises a bottom portion arranged in parallel to the first substrate and on a rear side of the display panel assembly opposite from the cover window, and a plurality of side walls that each extend from the bottom portion and covers side surfaces of the first substrate and the second substrate, each of the sidewalls being spaced-apart from the side surfaces of the first and second substrates by a distance, wherein the adhesive layer being arranged between sidewalls of the support member and the side surfaces of the first and second substrates.

17. The OLED display device of claim 16 , the adhesive layer filling a gap between the side surfaces of the first and second substrates and the sidewalls of the support member.

18. The OLED display device of claim 1 , the adhesive layer having in index of refraction substantially equal to that of the cover window.

19. The OLED display device of claim 17 , said gap being at least 200 microns, the adhesive layer being in direct contact with side surfaces of the first and second substrates and interior sidewalls of the support member to protect the display panel assembly from damage due to external impact.

20. The OLED display device of claim 1 , the light blocking portion of the cover window covering the integrated circuit chip, the adhesive layer filling a gap between the cover window and each of the integrated circuit chip and the mounting area of the first substrate to protect the integrated circuit chip from damage due to external impact.
