Abstract

A surgical access device is provided having a cannula and obturator. The cannula has a housing and tube section with an anchor located about the tube section. The obturator has a mechanism to deploy the anchor and adjust the cannula length. The anchor is moveable between a deployed and undeployed state where the undeployed state facilitates insertion and removal of the access device and the deployed state assists in fixation of the cannula in an anatomic structure. Anchor deployment is independent of cannula length adjustment.

Claims (36)

1. A surgical trocar comprising:

a) a cannula having a housing;

b) a cannula tube;

c) a collapsible segment disposed between the housing and the tube;

d) a spool located within the housing; and

b) a tension member in communication with the spool and the cannula tube wherein rotation of the spool causes the tension member to shorten thereby moving the cannula tube toward the cannula housing and collapsing the collapsible segment.

2. The surgical trocar of claim 1 , wherein the collapsible segment is comprised of a lateral segment and medial segment.

3. The surgical trocar of claim 2 , wherein the tension member is located between the lateral and medial segments.

4. The surgical trocar of claim 3 , wherein the collapsible segment is flexible.

5. The surgical trocar of claim 4 , wherein the cannula tube is rigid.

6. The surgical trocar of claim 5 , further comprising a lock in communication with the spool.

7. The surgical trocar of claim 6 , further comprising an obturator located medial to the housing, the collapsible segment and the cannula tube.

8. The surgical trocar of claim 7 , further comprising a tissue piercing tip at the distal end of the obturator.

9. The surgical trocar of claim 7 , further comprising a valve located within the cannula housing.

10. A surgical trocar comprising:

a) a cannula having a housing;

b) a rigid cannula tube;

c) a flexible collapsible segment disposed between the housing and the tube, the collapsible segment rotatably attached to the housing;

d) a spool located within the housing;

e) a lock attached to the housing in disengageable communication with the spool; and

b) a tension member in communication with the spool and the cannula tube wherein engagement of the lock and rotation of the housing causes rotation of the spool thereby causing the tension member to shorten thereby moving the cannula tube toward the cannula housing and collapsing the collapsible segment.

11. The surgical trocar of claim 10 , wherein the spool is arranged substantially perpendicular to the cannula tube, the spool having a medial annulus of a diameter to accommodate passage of surgical instruments therethrough.

12. The surgical trocar of claim 11 , further comprising a valve located substantially within the housing.

13. The surgical trocar of claim 11 , wherein the lock is a cam lock.

14. The surgical trocar of claim 13 , wherein the collapsible segment is comprised of a lateral segment and medial segment.

15. The surgical trocar of claim 14 , wherein the tension member is located between the lateral and medial segments.

16. A surgical trocar comprising:

a) a cannula having a housing;

b) a cannula tube;

c) a collapsible segment disposed between the housing and the tube;

d) a spool located within the housing, the spool having a medial annulus; an opening in the medial annulus defining a keyseat; and

e) a tension member in communication with the spool and the cannula tube.

17. The surgical access device of claim 16 , further comprising an obturator having a key to engage the keyseat.

18. The surgical trocar of claim 17 , wherein the collapsible segment is comprised of a lateral segment and medial segment.

19. The surgical trocar of claim 18 , wherein the tension member is located between the lateral and medial segments.

20. The surgical trocar of claim 16 , wherein the collapsible segment is flexible.
