Abstract

A computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a computing device with a touch screen display comprises displaying a portion of a web page in a web browser application without concurrently displaying a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) entry area for inputting URLs of web pages. A gesture is detected in a predefined area at the top of the touch screen display. In response to detecting the gesture in the predefined area at the top of the touch screen display, the URL entry area is displayed.

Claims (71)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

at a portable electronic device with a touch screen display:

displaying a portion of a web page on the touch screen display without displaying a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) entry area for inputting URLs of web pages, wherein

the web page has a web page length; and

the displayed portion of the web page has a displayed portion length that is less than the web page length;

detecting a single finger tap on the touch screen display in a predefined area at the top of the touch screen display, wherein the predefined area at the top of the touch screen display is a status bar for the portable electronic device; and

in response to detecting the single finger tap on the touch screen display in the predefined area at the top of the touch screen display, translating the web page to display a top portion of the web page and concurrently displaying the URL entry area for inputting URLs of web pages adjacent to the top portion of the web page.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , including:

detecting a gesture on the URL entry area; and

in response to detecting the gesture on the URL entry area, displaying a soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area includes a single key for entering “.com” in the URL entry area.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , including:

detecting a gesture on the URL entry area; and

in response to detecting the gesture on the URL entry area, displaying:

a soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area, and

a search term entry area for inputting search terms for web searches.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein the soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area includes a single key for entering “.com” in the URL entry area.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , including:

detecting a gesture on the search term entry area; and

in response to detecting the gesture on the search term entry area, replacing display of the soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area with display of a soft keyboard for entering text in the search term entry area.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , including:

detecting an upward swipe gesture on the touch screen display; and

in response to detecting the upward swipe gesture on the touch screen display, translating the web page and ceasing to display the URL entry area.

8. A portable electronic device, comprising:

a touch screen display;

one or more processors;

memory; and

one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the programs including instructions for:

displaying a portion of a web page on the touch screen display without displaying a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) entry area for inputting URLs of web pages, wherein

the web page has a web page length; and

the displayed portion of the web page has a displayed portion length that is less than the web page length;

detecting a single finger tap on the touch screen display in a predefined area at the top of the touch screen display, wherein the predefined area at the top of the touch screen display is a status bar for the portable electronic device; and

in response to detecting the single finger tap on the touch screen display in the predefined area at the top of the touch screen display, translating the web page to display a top portion of the web page and concurrently displaying the URL entry area for inputting URLs of web pages adjacent to the top portion of the web page.

9. The device of claim 8 , including instructions for:

detecting a gesture on the URL entry area; and

in response to detecting the gesture on the URL entry area, displaying a soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area includes a single key for entering “.com” in the URL entry area.

11. The device of claim 8 , including instructions for:

detecting a gesture on the URL entry area; and

in response to detecting the gesture on the URL entry area, displaying:

a soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area, and

a search term entry area for inputting search terms for web searches.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area includes a single key for entering “.com” in the URL entry area.

13. The device of claim 11 , including instructions for:

detecting a gesture on the search term entry area; and

in response to detecting the gesture on the search term entry area, replacing display of the soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area with display of a soft keyboard for entering text in the search term entry area.

14. The device of claim 8 , including instructions for:

detecting an upward swipe gesture on the touch screen display; and

in response to detecting the upward swipe gesture on the touch screen display, translating the web page and ceasing to display the URL entry area.

15. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having stored therein instructions, which when executed by a portable electronic device with a touch screen display, cause the device to:

display a portion of a web page on the touch screen display without displaying a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) entry area for inputting URLs of web pages, wherein

the web page has a web page length; and

the displayed portion of the web page has a displayed portion length that is less than the web page length;

detect a single finger tap on the touch screen display in a predefined area at the top of the touch screen display, wherein the predefined area at the top of the touch screen display is a status bar for the portable electronic device; and

in response to detecting the single finger tap on the touch screen display in the predefined area at the top of the touch screen display, translate the web page to display a top portion of the web page and concurrently display the URL entry area for inputting URLs of web pages adjacent to the top portion of the web page.

16. The computer readable storage medium of claim 15 , including instructions which cause the device to:

detect a gesture on the URL entry area; and

in response to detecting the gesture on the URL entry area, display a soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area.

17. The computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area includes a single key for entering “.com” in the URL entry area.

18. The computer readable storage medium of claim 15 , including instructions which cause the device to:

detect a gesture on the URL entry area; and

in response to detecting the gesture on the URL entry area, display:

a soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area, and

a search term entry area for inputting search terms for web searches.

19. The computer readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area includes a single key for entering “.com” in the URL entry area.

20. The computer readable storage medium of claim 18 , including instructions which cause the device to:

detect a gesture on the search term entry area; and

in response to detecting the gesture on the search term entry area, replace display of the soft keyboard for entering text in the URL entry area with display of a soft keyboard for entering text in the search term entry area.

21. The computer readable storage medium of claim 15 , including instructions which cause the device to:

detect an upward swipe gesture on the touch screen display; and

in response to detecting the upward swipe gesture on the touch screen display, translate the web page and cease to display the URL entry area.
