Abstract

Methods and apparatus enable reliable and improved isolation between two portions of a bore extending through a casing string disposed in a borehole. A downhole deployment valve (DDV) may provide the isolation utilizing a valve member such as a flapper that is disposed in a housing of the DDV and is designed to close against a seat within the housing. The DDV includes an operating mechanism for opening/closing the DDV. In use, pressure in one portion of a well that is in fluid communication with a well surface may be bled off and open at well surface while maintaining pressure in another portion of the casing string beyond the DDV.

Claims (29)

1. A valve for use in a casing string, the valve comprising:

a housing having a bore;

a valve member moveable between a closed position obstructing the bore through the housing and an open position;

a sleeve movable within the housing between a retracted location spaced from the valve member and an extended location passing through a valve seat to displace the valve member to the open position; and

a blocking lever configured to engage and secure the valve member in the closed position, the blocking lever movable between a block position when the sleeve is in the retracted location and an unblock position when the sleeve is in the extended location, wherein the blocking lever is operatively connected to a button that is disposed in a path of the sleeve and the button is movable by contact with the sleeve.

2. The valve of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve causes the blocking lever to move to the unblock position when the sleeve contacts the button.

3. The valve of claim 1 , wherein the blocking lever moves to the block position when the sleeve moves apart from the button.

4. The valve of claim 1 , wherein the blocking lever is pivotally attached to the housing such that the blocking lever pivots between the block position and the unblock position.

5. The valve of claim 1 , wherein the blocking lever is biased in the block position by a biasing member.

6. A valve for use in a casing string, the valve comprising:

a housing having a bore;

a valve member moveable between a closed position obstructing the bore through the housing and an open position;

a sleeve movable within the housing between a retracted location spaced from the valve member and an extended location passing through a valve seat to displace the valve member to the open position;

a blocking member configured to secure the valve member in the closed position, the blocking member movable between a block position when the sleeve is in the retracted location and an unblock position when the sleeve is in the extended location; and

a tether affixed to the sleeve and the blocking member.

7. The valve of claim 6 , wherein the blocking member is disposed on a first side of the valve member and the sleeve is disposed on a second side of the valve member when the valve member is in the closed position and the sleeve is in the retracted location.

8. A method of selectively isolating a zone in a wellbore, the method comprising:

positioning a valve in the wellbore, the valve having a housing, a valve member, a sleeve, and a blocking lever, wherein the blocking lever is operatively connected to a button that is disposed in a path of the sleeve and the button is movable by contact with the sleeve;

selectively isolating the zone in the wellbore by moving the sleeve within the housing from an extended location to a retracted location, which allows the valve member to move to a closed position; and

securing the valve member in the closed position by moving the blocking lever to a block position as the sleeve moves within the housing to the retracted location.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the blocking lever moves to the block position when the sleeve moves apart from the button.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising releasing the valve member by moving the blocking lever to an unblock position as the sleeve moves into contact with the button.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising opening the zone in the wellbore by moving the sleeve within the housing from the retracted location to the extended location, which causes the valve member to move to an open position.

12. A method of selectively isolating a zone in a wellbore, the method comprising:

positioning a valve in the wellbore, the valve having a housing, a valve member, a sleeve, and a blocking member attached to sleeve via a tether;

selectively isolating the zone in the wellbore by moving the sleeve within the housing from an extended location to a retracted location, which allows the valve member to move to a closed position; and

securing the valve member in the closed position by moving the blocking member to a block position as the sleeve moves within the housing to the retracted location, the blocking member being in contact with the valve member in the block position.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising releasing the valve member by moving the blocking member to an unblock position as the sleeve moves within the housing to the extended location.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the tether is in tension when the blocking member is in the block position and the sleeve is in the retracted position.
