Abstract

An oral care composition comprising fused silica, wherein at least 95% of the fused silica particles are spherical.

Claims (18)

1. An oral care composition comprising

(a) from about 1% to about 50%, by weight of the composition, of fused silica, wherein said fused silica has a particle size with a D90 of less than about 50 microns and wherein at least 95% of the fused silica particles are spherical;

(b) stannous ion in an amount of from about 1,000 ppm to about 10,000 ppm; and

(c) an orally acceptable carrier.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the spherical fused silica particles are characterized by having a mean Aspect ratio greater than about 0.85, a minimum Circularity greater than about 0.6 and a minimum Convexity greater than about 0.8.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition has a Radioactive Dentine Abrasion value (RDA) of less than about 250.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition has an RDA of less than about 120.

5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition has a Pellicle Cleaning Ratio (PCR) ranging from about 70 to about 200.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the PCR to RDA ratio is at least about 0.7.

7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the PCR to RDA ratio is at least about 0.8.

8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the PCR to RDA ratio is at least about 0.9.

9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the PCR to RDA ratio is at least about 1.0.

10. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the amount of spherical fused silica is from about 5% to about 20%, by weight of the composition.

11. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the composition has an RDA of less than about 170.

12. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising angular fused silica at from about 0.1% to less than 5% by weight of the composition.

13. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the median particle size of the spherical fused silica is from about 3.0 microns to about 15.0 microns.

14. The composition of claim 13 , wherein the average size of 50% of the spherical fused silica particles (D50) is less than 8 microns.

15. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the orally-acceptable carrier comprises one or a mixture of fluoride ion sources, antibacterial agents, anticalculus agents, buffers, other abrasive materials, peroxide sources, alkali metal bicarbonate salts, thickening materials, humectants, water, surfactants, titanium dioxide, flavor system, sweetening agents, cooling agents, xylitol, and coloring agents.
