Abstract

Systems and methods for processing sensor analyte data are disclosed, including initiating calibration, updating calibration, evaluating clinical acceptability of reference and sensor analyte data, and evaluating the quality of sensor calibration. The sensor can be calibrated using a calibration set of one or more matched sensor and reference analyte data pairs. Reference data resulting from benchtop testing an analyte sensor prior to its insertion can be used to provide initial calibration of the sensor data. Reference data from a short term continuous analyte sensor implanted in a user can be used to initially calibrate or update sensor data from a long term continuous analyte sensor.

Claims (30)

1. A method for analyzing data from an analyte sensor, the method comprising:

substantially simultaneously receiving data from a first substantially continuous analyte sensor implanted in a host and a second substantially continuous analyte sensor implanted in the same host at the same time, wherein the first and second sensors are designed differently, whereby the first and second sensors exhibit different stabilities;

processing in real-time, by a processor module, the data from the first and second sensors to diagnose a deficiency in the data from the first or second sensor and/or calibrate the data from the first or second sensor; and

outputting glucose values in response to the processing.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising requesting external reference data from a single point glucose monitor in response to the processing.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising using the external reference data for calibration of the data from the first and second sensors.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the processing comprises diagnosing a deficiency, and wherein the processing comprises compensating for transient problems experienced by one of the first and second sensors by the use of the other of the first and second sensors.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the processing comprises calibrating the data from one of the first or second sensors using data from the other of the first or second sensors.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the processing comprises using prior information from bench-top tests to determine a sensitivity of at least one of the first or second sensor.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second sensors are both transcutaneous glucose sensors.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second sensors each comprise a sensing method selected from the group consisting of enzymatic, chemical, physical, electrochemical, spectrophotometric, polarimetric, calorimetric and radiometric.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the data comprises using wired communication.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the data comprises using wireless communication.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second sensors have different initial stabilities.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the processing comprise determining a stability of one or both of the sensors in response to the processing.

13. A system for analyzing data from an analyte sensor, the method comprising:

a first substantially continuous analyte sensor adapted to be implanted in a host, wherein the first sensor is configured to generate data associated with the analyte in the host;

a second substantially continuous analyte sensor adapted to be implanted in the same host at the same time, wherein the second sensor is configured to generate data associated with the analyte in the host, and wherein the first and second sensors are designed differently, whereby the first and second sensors exhibit different stabilities; and

a processor module configured to substantially simultaneously receive and process in real-time data from the first and second sensors to diagnose a deficiency in the data from the first or second sensor and/or calibrate the data from the first or second sensor, and wherein the processor module is further configured to output glucose values in response to the processing.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the processor module is further configured to request external reference data from a single point glucose monitor in response to the processing.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the processor module is further configured to use the external reference data for calibration of the data from the first and second sensors.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein the processor module is configured to diagnose a deficiency in the data from the first or second sensor, and wherein the processor module is further configured to compensate for transient problems experienced by one of the first and second sensors by the use of the other of the first and second sensors.

17. The system of claim 13 , wherein the processor module is configured to comprises calibrate the data from the first or second sensor using data from the other of the first or second sensor.

18. The system of claim 13 , wherein the processor module is configured to use prior information from bench-top tests to determine a sensitivity of at least one of the first or second sensor.

19. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first and second sensors are both transcutaneous glucose sensors.
