Abstract

This disclosure concerns a metal oxide surface treatment with a fluoroalkyl silanizing agent.

Claims (17)

1. A composition of matter comprising a metal oxide surface having a group (CF 3 ) 2 C(OH)—CH 2 —CH═CH—Si(O(CH 2 ) x CH 3 ) 3-Z (OM) Z where z=1, 2 or 3 bound thereto, x=0 or 1 and M is selected from the group consisting of silicon, aluminum, and titanium.

2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the metal oxide surface is a silicon oxide and M is Si.

3. A method of metal oxide surface treatment suitable for use to chemically bond organooxysilane groups onto metal oxide surfaces, the method comprising:

immersing a metal oxide surface into a solution of an organoalkoxysilane, a catalytic quantity of amine, a stoichiometric quantity of water and an inert solvent;

wherein said metal oxide surface is one selected from the group consisting of an oxide of silicon, aluminum and titanium;

wherein said organoalkoxysilane has the formula, X—Si(OR) n Z 3-n wherein X=alkyl, heteroatom functionalized alkyl and R═CH 3 , CH 2 CH 3 with n=1, 2, or 3 and Z ═CH 3 ;

wherein said amine is a primary alkyl amine; and

wherein said inert solvent is an organic solvent.

4. A method of metal oxide surface treatment according to claim 3 wherein said metal oxide is silicon oxide, said organoalkoxysilane is selected from the group consisting of a compound as represented by the formula

and a compound as represented by the formula

said amine is selected from the group defined by the formula CH 3 (CH 2 ) n NH 2 n=4,5,6,7,8, said organic solvent being selected from the group consisting of chloroform, 2-propanol, methylene chloride, toluene, and ethylacetate.

5. A method of metal oxide surface treatment suitable for use to chemically bond organooxysilane groups onto metal oxide surfaces, the method compromising:

immersing a metal oxide surface into a solution of an aminoalkylalkoxysilane in an inert solvent;

then immersing the aminoalkylalkoxysilane treated metal oxide surface into the vapors of an organoalkoxysilane wherein said metal oxide surface is one selected from the group consisting of an oxide of silicon, aluminum and titanium;

wherein said organoalkoxysilane has the formula, X—Si(OR) n Z 3-n wherein X=alkyl, heteroatom functionalized alkyl and R═CH 3 , CH 2 CH 3 with n=1,2, or 3 and Z═CH 3 ;

wherein said amine is a primary alkyl amine; and

wherein said inert solvent is an organic solvent.
