Abstract

A method of passive surveying comprises generating one or more detected signals by passively detecting a signal generated within a subsurface earth formation due to a seismoelectric response or an electroseismic response in at least one porous subsurface earth formation containing at least one fluid, and processing the one or more detected signals to determine at least one property of the subsurface earth formation.

Claims (45)

1. A method for surveying, comprising;

detecting, by an electromagnetic sensor, an electromagnetic signal generated by a subsurface earth formation in response to a passive-source electromagnetic signal, wherein the electromagnetic signal is generated by an electroseismic or seismoelectric conversion of the passive-source electromagnetic signal;

detecting, by a seismic sensor, a seismic signal generated by the subsurface earth formation in response to a passive-source electromagnetic signal, wherein the seismic signal is generated by an electroseismic Cir seismoelectric conversion of the passive-source electromagnetic signal; and

receiving, by a signal processor, the electromagnetic signal from the electromagnetic sensor;

receiving, by the signal processor, the seismic signal from the seismic sensor; and

processing, by the signal processor, the electromagnetic signal and the seismic signal to determine at least one property associated with the subsurface earth formation.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic signal further comprises a vertical component of the electromagnetic signal and the seismic signal further comprises a vertical component of the seismic signal.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic sensor comprises one or more capacitive plates configured to measure the electromagnetic signal as a capacitive charge on one or more of the capacitive plates.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic sensor comprises one or more of a dipole antenna, a multi-pole antenna, a directional antenna, and a concentric dipole antenna.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic sensor comprises a pair of electrically-coupled porous pot electrodes configured to be disposed within the earth, a first of the pair configured to be disposed at a first depth and a second of the pair configured to be disposed at a second depth, wherein the pair of electrodes are configured to he substantially vertically aligned.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

introducing, by a signal generator, a reference signal into the near surface of the earth;

detecting, by the electromagnetic sensor, a modulated reference signal comprising the reference signal modulated by the electromagnetic signal; and

processing, by the signal processor, the modulated reference signal to determine the electromagnetic signal.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic sensor comprises a first electromagnetic sensor and a second electromagnetic sensor and the method further comprises:

detecting, by the first electromagnetic sensor, a vertical component of the electromagnetic signal:

detecting, by the second electromagnetic sensor, a horizontal component of the electromagnetic signal; and

receiving, by the signal processor, the vertical component of the electromagnetic signal from the first electromagnetic sensor,

receiving, by the signal processor, the horizontal component of the electromagnetic signal from the second electromagnetic sensor; and

utilizing, by the signal processor, the horizontal component of the electromagnetic signal as a filter to isolate the vertical component of the electromagnetic signal.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic sensor is one of a plurality of electromagnetic sensors configured to be arranged in a pattern and the method further comprises detecting, by the electromagnetic sensor, one or more time-dependent properties associated with the subsurface earth formation.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising detecting the electromagnetic signal and the seismic signal repeatedly while disposed in a moving vehicle.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the electromagnetic sensor and the seismoelectric sensor are configured to be disposed in a well-bore.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising correlating, by the signal processor, the electromagnetic signal and the seismic signal to determine at least one property associated with the subsurface earth formation.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the passive-source electromagnetic signal includes, at least in part, a man-made source of electromagnetic radiation.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the passive-source electromagnetic signal includes, at least in part, a naturally occurring electromagnetic field.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one property comprises the existence of a subsurface formation containing at least one hydrocarbon.

15. An apparatus for surveying comprising:

one or more sensing elements configured to detect a seismic signal generated by the subsurface earth formation in response to a passive-source electromagnetic signal; wherein the seismic signal is generated by an electroseismic or seismoelectric conversion of the passive-source electromagnetic signal;

one or more outputs configured to transmit the seismic signal to a signal processor for processing the seismic signal to identify at least one property of the subsurface earth formation.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the one or more sensing elements are further configured to detect a vertical component of the seismic signal.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the one or more sensing elements comprise one or more of a geophone, a hydrophone, and an accelerometer.

18. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the signal processor is further configured to identify the at least one property of the subsurface earth formation by correlating the seismic signal with an electromagnetic signal received from an electromagnetic sensor.

19. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the signal processor is further configured to identify the at least one property of the subsurface earth formation by analyzing one or more frequency characteristics of the seismic signal.

20. The apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising a filter configured to reject surface waves traveling across the one or more sensing elements.

21. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the signal processor is further configured to identify the at least one property of the subsurface earth formation by correlating the seismic signal with one or more predetermined seismic transit times.

22. The apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising a plurality of seismic sensors configured to be arranged in a pattern and operable to detect one or more time-dependent properties associated with the subsurface earth formation.

The apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising a plurality of seismic sensors configured to be arranged in a pattern, wherein the signal processor is further configured to cross-correlate more than one seismic signal received from more than one of the plurality of seismic sensors to reduce a signal-to-noise ratio.

24. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the one or more sensing elements are configured to repeatedly detect the seismic signal while disposed in a moving vehicle.

25. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the one or more sensing elements are configured to be disposed in a well-bore.

26. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the passive-source electromagnetic signal includes, at least in part, a man-made source of electromagnetic radiation.

27. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the passive-source electromagnetic signal includes, at least in part, a naturally occurring electromagnetic field.

28. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the signal processor is further configured to utilize a predictive filter to reject one or more horizontal components of the seismic signal.

The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the one or more sensing elements are further configured to detect a electromagnetic signal generated by a subsurface earth formation in response to a passive-source electromagnetic signal, wherein the electromagnetic signal is generated by an electroseismic or seismoelectric conversion of the passive-source electromagnetic signal.

30. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the one or more sensing elements comprise a plurality of seismic sensors configured to be arranged in a pattern and are each configured to repeatedly detect the electromagnetic signal while disposed in a moving vehicle.
