Abstract

A process for producing a hydrocarbon from biomass. A feed stream containing biomass having fatty acids, mono-, di-, and/or triglycerides, and a phosphorus content of between about 1 wppm and about 1,000 wppm is provided. A heated hydrocarbon solvent and a hydrogen-rich gas are provided. The feed stream, the heated hydrocarbon solvent, and the hydrogen-rich gas are combined in the presence of a low activity hydrogenation catalyst. A spent low activity hydrogenation catalyst is recovered at the end of a run wherein the spent low activity hydrogenation catalyst contains at least 3% by weight phosphorus.

Claims (50)

1. A method for producing hydrocarbons from biomass, comprising the steps of:

providing a feed stream containing biomass having fatty acids, mono-, di-, and/or triglycerides, and a phosphorus content of about 1 wppm to about 1,000 wppm, at a temperature from about 140° F. to about 240° F.;

providing a heated hydrocarbon solvent at a temperature from about 500° F. to about 800° F.;

providing a hydrogen-rich gas;

removing phosphorus and producing hydrocarbons by combining the feed stream, the heated hydrocarbon solvent, and the hydrogen-rich gas to generate a reactor feed and contacting the reactor feed with a low activity hydrogenation catalyst, where the reactor feed is at a temperature from about 400° F. to about 700° F.; and

recovering a spent low activity hydrogenation catalyst at the end of run wherein the spent low activity hydrogenation catalyst contains between about 3% and about 10% by weight phosphorus;

wherein

the low activity hydrogenation catalyst is in a reactor; and

the heated hydrocarbon solvent provides the heat for achieving the reactor feed temperature and the reactor temperature.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the feed stream is selected from the group comprising animal fats, poultry oil, soybean oil, canola oil, rapeseed oils, palm oil, palm kernel oil, jatropha oil, castor oil, camelina oil, algae oil, seaweed oil, halophile oils, rendered fats, restaurant greases, brown grease, yellow grease, waste industrial frying oils, fish oils, and tall oil.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the low activity hydrogenation catalyst is a sulfided mono-metallic base metal catalyst.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the low activity hydrogenation catalyst contains between about 2% and about 10% by weight molybdenum or tungsten.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the spent low activity hydrogenation catalyst contains between about 6% and about 10% phosphorus by weight.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the spent low activity hydrogenation catalyst contains between about 9% and about 10% phosphorus by weight.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the product of the step of combining the feed stream, the heated hydrocarbon solvent, and the hydrogen-rich gas in the presence of a low activity hydrogenation catalyst is further reacted in the presence of a high activity hydrogenation catalyst.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the high activity hydrogenation catalyst is a bimetallic base metal catalyst.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the high activity hydrogenation catalyst contains at least 16% total metals from the group comprising nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein phosphorus is recovered from the spent low activity hydrogenation catalyst.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the phosphorus is recovered in a furnace under catalyst decoking conditions.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the low activity hydrogenation catalyst is regenerated and reused after phosphorus recovery and catalyst decoking.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the hydrocarbons comprise n-paraffins in the C 11 to C 24 range.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the hydrocarbons are hydroisomerized.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the hydroisomerized hydrocarbons comprise renewable diesel.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the hydrocarbons are fractionated into products comprising chemical intermediates, fluids, and solvents.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein the heated hydrocarbon solvent is between about 550° F. to about 750° F.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein the heated hydrocarbon solvent is provided from the hydrocarbons produced from biomass.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein the phosphorus content of the biomass is about 10 wppm to about 1,000 wppm.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein the phosphorus content of the biomass is about 1 wppm to about 500 wppm.

21. A method for producing hydrocarbons from biomass, comprising the steps of:

providing a feed stream containing biomass having fatty acids, mono-, di-, and/or triglycerides, and a phosphorus content of about 1 wppm to about 1,000 wppm, at a temperature from about 140° F. to about 240° F.;

providing a heated hydrocarbon solvent at a temperature from about 500° F. to about 800° F.;

providing a hydrogen-rich gas;

removing phosphorus and producing hydrocarbons by combining the feed stream, the heated hydrocarbon solvent, and the hydrogen-rich gas to generate a reactor feed and contacting the reactor feed with a low activity hydrogenation catalyst, where the reactor feed is at a temperature from about 400° F. to about 700° F.; and

recovering-a spent low activity hydrogenation catalyst at the end of run wherein the spent low activity hydrogenation catalyst contains between about 3% and about 10% by weight phosphorus;

wherein
