Abstract

Disclosed herein are aspects of optical tape technology, tape manufacturing, and tape usage. Methods and systems of tape technology disclose optical tape media including: configurations, formulations, markings, and structure; optical tape manufacturing methods, systems, and apparatus methods and systems including: curing processes, coating methods, embossing, drums, testing, tracking alignment stamper strip; optical tape methods and systems including: pick up head adapted for the disclosed optical tape; and optical tape uses including optical storage media devices for multimedia applications.

Claims (29)

1. A data storage system comprising:

an optical tape having a set of gaps repeating at regular intervals along the tape and dividing the tape into segments, the segments having a plurality of tracks each exhibiting fields of modulated wobble indicative of a physical track address;

an optical pick-up unit configured to detect the fields of modulated wobble; and

at least one controller operatively arranged with the pick-up unit, configured to command movement of the tape and, for each gap of the set, configured to (i) record the physical track address of one of the tracks on one side of the gap, wherein the pick-up unit has a position when detecting the fields of modulated wobble indicative of the physical track address of the one track, (ii) maintain the position of the pick-up unit as the gap moves by the pick-up unit, (iii) record the physical track address of a first detected one of the tracks on the other side of the gap, and (iv) assign a logical track address to the recorded physical track addresses.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the physical track address of the one of the tracks on the one side of the gap is different than the physical track address of the first detected one of the tracks on the other side of the gap.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one controller is further configured to store the physical track addresses and assigned logical address to the tape via the pick-up unit.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the recorded physical track addresses and assigned logical track address each have an integer value, and wherein the at least one controller is further configured to increment the values of the physical and logical track addresses and to record the incremented values to create a mapping of physical track addresses to logical track addresses for at least some of the tracks of the tape.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the recorded physical track addresses and assigned logical track address each have an integer value, and wherein the at least one controller is further configured to decrement the values of the physical and logical track addresses and to record the decremented values to create a mapping of physical track addresses to logical track addresses for at least some of the tracks of the tape.

6. A method for calibrating a data storage system including (i) an optical media having a gap dividing the media into segments having a plurality of tracks each exhibiting fields of modulated wobble indicative of a physical track address and (ii) an optical pick-up unit configured to detect the fields of modulated wobble, the method comprising:

recording the physical track address of one of the tracks on one side of the gap, wherein the pick-up unit has a position when detecting the fields of modulated wobble indicative of the physical track address of the one track;

maintaining the position of the pick-up unit as the gap moves by the pick-up unit; and

recording the physical track address of a first detected one of the tracks on the other side of the gap.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising assigning a logical track address to the recorded physical track addresses.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising storing the physical track addresses and assigned logical track address to the media.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the recorded physical track addresses and assigned logical track address each have an integer value, further comprising incrementing the values of the physical and logical track addresses and recording the incremented values to create a mapping of physical track addresses to logical track addresses for at least some of the tracks of the media.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the recorded physical track addresses and assigned logical track address each have an integer value, further comprising decrementing the values of the physical and logical track addresses and recording the decremented values to create a mapping of physical track addresses to logical track addresses for at least some of the tracks of the media.

11. The method of claim 6 wherein the physical track address of the one of the tracks on the one side of the gap is different than the physical track address of the first detected one of the tracks on the other side of the gap.

12. A data storage system comprising:

an optical media having a gap dividing the media into segments having a plurality of tracks each exhibiting fields of modulated wobble indicative of a physical track address;

an optical pick-up unit configured to detect the fields of modulated wobble; and

at least one controller operatively arranged with the pick-up unit and configured to (i) record the physical track address of one of the tracks on one side of the gap, wherein the pick-up unit has a position when detecting the fields of modulated wobble indicative of the physical track address of the one track, (ii) maintain the position of the pick-up unit as the gap moves by the pick-up unit, and (iii) record the physical track address of a first detected one of the tracks on the other side of the gap.

13. The system of claim 12 wherein the physical track address of the one of the tracks on the one side of the gap is different than the physical track address of the first detected one of the tracks on the other side of the gap.

14. The system of claim 12 wherein the at least one controller is further configured to assign a logical track address to the recorded physical track addresses.

15. The system of claim 14 wherein the at least one controller is further configured to store the physical track addresses and assigned logical address to the media via the pick-up unit.

16. The system of claim 14 wherein the recorded physical track addresses and assigned logical track address each have an integer value, and wherein the at least one controller is further configured to increment the values of the physical and logical track addresses and to record the incremented values to create a mapping of physical track addresses to logical track addresses for at least some of the tracks of the media.

17. The system of claim 14 wherein the recorded physical track addresses and assigned logical track address each have an integer value, and wherein the at least one controller is further configured to decrement the values of the physical and logical track addresses and to record the decremented values to create a mapping of physical track addresses to logical track addresses for at least some of the tracks of the media.

18. The system of claim 12 wherein the gap repeats at regular intervals along the media.

19. The system of claim 12 wherein the media has an edge and wherein the one of the tracks on the one side of the gap is adjacent to the edge.

20. The system of claim 12 wherein the optical media is a linear optical tape.
