Abstract

A traffic shaper which includes a cell buffer for temporarily storing an ATM cell arrived thereat, a first calculator for calculating an estimated cell sending time according to a VC contracted bandwidth, a second calculator for calculating an estimated cell sending time according to a VP contracted bandwidth, a binary tree VP sorting circuit for determining VP to be sent in top priority, a binary tree VC sorting circuit for determining VC to be sent in top priority, and a sending circuit for sending a cell in which the determined VP and VC are both brought to a transmittable state. The VP estimated sending time is revised according to the VC estimated sending time.

Claims (38)

1. A communication device for transferring packets, the communication device comprising:

2. The communication device according to claim 1 ,

wherein said buffer unit temporarily stores a plurality of packets, each of said plurality of packets belonging to one of a plurality of flow groups, and

wherein said sending control unit reads from said buffer unit, a packet belonging to any one of said flow groups and belonging to a specific flow in one of said flow groups, and transmits said packet within a first transmission bandwidth assigned to all of said flow groups, within a second transmission bandwidth assigned to said one of said flow groups to which said packet belongs, and within a third transmission bandwidth assigned to said specific flow.

3. The communication device according to claim 1 ,

wherein said buffer unit temporarily stores a plurality of packets belonging to a flow group, and

wherein said sending control unit reads from said buffer unit, a packet belonging to said flow group and belonging to a specific flow in said flow group, and transmits said packet to an output line within a bandwidth of said output line, within a first transmission bandwidth assigned to said flow group to which said packet belongs, and within a second transmission bandwidth assigned to said specific flow.

4. The communication device according to claim 1 , wherein said sending control unit reads, a packet having specific header information in preference to other packets belonging to said specific flow.

5. A packet transferring method in a communication device having a buffer unit and a sending control unit for transferring packets, said method comprising the steps of:

assigning, by a control unit, a first transmission bandwidth to a flow group and a second transmission bandwidth to a specific flow which belongs to the flow group;

temporarily storing packets in said buffer unit;

reading, by said sending control unit, a packet from said buffer unit; and

reading, by said sending control unit, from said buffer unit, a packet belonging to the flow group and belonging to the specific flow if said packet is both within said first transmission bandwidth and within said second transmission bandwidth, both said first transmission bandwidth and said second transmission bandwidth being assigned by said control unit, and transmitting said packet among packets read from the buffer,

wherein the packet is transmitted according to a priority determined by referring to a header of the packet.

6. The packet transferring method according to claim 5 , further comprising the step of:

temporarily storing a plurality of packets, each of said plurality of packets belonging to one of a plurality of flow groups in said buffer unit,

wherein said sending control unit reads from said buffer unit, a packet belonging to any one of said flow groups and belonging to a specific flow in one of said flow groups, and transmits said packet within a first transmission bandwidth assigned to all of said flow groups, within a second transmission bandwidth assigned to said one of said flow groups to which said packet belongs, and within a third transmission bandwidth assigned to said specific flow.

7. The packet transferring method according to claim 5 , further comprising the step of:

temporarily storing a plurality of packets belonging to a flow group in said buffer unit,

wherein said sending control unit reads from said buffer unit, as said packet, a packet belonging to said flow group and belonging to a specific flow in said flow group and transmits said packet to an output line within a bandwidth of said output line, within a first transmission bandwidth assigned to said flow group to which said packet belongs, and within a second transmission bandwidth assigned to said specific flow.

8. The packet transferring method according to claim 5 , further comprising the step of:

setting priority corresponding to each of said packets,

wherein said sending control unit reads from said buffer unit a packet in accordance with the set priority and transmits said packet.

9. A packet processing circuit operating in a communication device for transferring packets and having a buffer unit for temporarily storing packets, said packet processing circuit comprising:

a control unit configured to pre-assign a first transmission bandwidth to a flow group and a second transmission bandwidth to a specific flow which belongs to the flow group; and

a sending control unit configured to read a packet from said buffer unit,

wherein said sending control unit transmits said packet within said first transmission bandwidth and said second transmission bandwidth pre-assigned to said packet,

wherein said control unit reads, from said buffer unit, a packet belonging to the flow group and belonging to the specific flow if said packet is both within said first transmission bandwidth and within said transmission bandwidth, both said first transmission bandwidth and said second transmission bandwidth being pre-assigned by said control unit, and transmits said packet among packets read from buffer,

wherein the packet is transmitted according to a priority determined by referring to a header of the packet.

10. The packet processing circuit according to claim 9 , wherein said buffer unit temporarily stores a plurality of packets, each of the plurality of the packets belonging to one of a plurality of flow groups, and
