Abstract

An apparatus may include a port to receive a ranging request from a cable modem and a processor in communication with the port. The processor may assign a service identifier to the cable modem, match the service identifier with a link layer address of the cable modem, receive a router advertisement and comparing the source link layer address from the router advertisement to the link layer address of the cable modem, and determine if the link layer address of the cable modem is the same as the source link layer address.

Claims (34)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a ranging request from a cable modem;

assigning a service identifier to the cable modem;

matching the service identifier with a media access control (MAC) address of the cable modem;

receiving a router advertisement and comparing a source MAC address from the router advertisement to the MAC address of the cable modem, wherein the source MAC address comprises a MAC address of a sender of the router advertisement; and

determining if the MAC address of the cable modem is the same as the source MAC address.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein determining if the MAC address is the same as the source MAC address comprises determining that they are the same and that the router advertisement came from the cable modem.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein determining if the MAC address is the same as the source MAC address comprises determining that they are not the same and that the router advertisement did not come from the cable modem.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising tagging the cable modem as a router if the MAC address of the cable modem is the same as the source MAC address.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising tagging consumer premises equipment as a router if the MAC address of the cable modem is not the same as the source MAC address.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining if the cable modem boot mode is internet protocol version 4 or internet protocol version 6 based on the version of a first relayed dynamic host configuration protocol message.

7. An apparatus comprising:

a cable modem termination system (CMTS) receiving a ranging request from a cable modem;

the CMTS assigning the cable modem a service identifier;

the CMTS matching the service identifier with a media access control (MAC) address of the cable modem;

the CMTS receiving a router advertisement and comparing a source MAC address from the router advertisement to the MAC address of the cable modem, wherein the source MAC address comprises a MAC address of a sender of the router advertisement; and

the CMTS determining if the MAC address of the cable modem is the same as the source MAC address.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein determining if the MAC address is the same as the source MAC address comprises determining that they are the same and that the router advertisement came from the cable modem.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 further comprising the CMTS determining if the MAC address is the same as the source MAC address comprises determining that they are not the same and that the router advertisement did not come from the cable modem.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 further comprising the CMTS tagging the cable modem as a router if the MAC address of the cable modem is the same as the source MAC address.

11. The apparatus of claim 7 further comprising the CMTS tagging consumer premises equipment as a router if the MAC address of the cable modem is not the same as the source MAC address.

12. The apparatus of claim 7 further comprising the CMTS determining if the cable modem boot mode is internet protocol version 4 or internet protocol version 6 based on the version of a first relayed dynamic host configuration protocol message.

13. An apparatus comprising:

a port to receive a ranging request from a cable modem; and

a processor in communication with the port, the processor to:

assign a service identifier to the cable modem;

match the service identifier with a media access control (MAC) address of the cable modem;

receive a router advertisement and compare a source MAC address from the router advertisement to the MAC address of the cable modem, wherein the source MAC address comprises a MAC address of a sender of the router advertisement; and

determine if the MAC address of the cable modem is the same as the source MAC address.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein if the MAC address of the cable modem is the same as the source MAC address, the processor to determine that the router advertisement came from the cable modem.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein if the MAC address of the cable modem is not the same as the source MAC address, the processor to determine that the router advertisement did not come from the cable modem.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising the processor to tag the cable modem as a router if the MAC address of the cable modem is the same as the source MAC address.

17. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising the processor to tag consumer premises equipment as a router if the MAC address of the cable modem is not the same as the source MAC address.

18. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising the processor to determine if the cable modem boot mode is internet protocol version 4 or internet protocol version 6 based on the version of a first relayed dynamic host configuration protocol message.
