Abstract

A material transfer system for storing, transferring and dispensing viscous material, such as fluids and liquids, includes a material containment vessel with an upper region incorporating a motive force and a bottom region with a material ingress and egress opening. A diconical or other shaped force transfer device is located in the material containment area. The force transfer device is an energy transducer when the material containment is filled with highly viscous materials, such as adhesives, sealants, mastics or lubricating greases. The force transfer device serves as an integral part of a level indicator for both viscous fluids and lower viscosity liquids. The viscous material itself forms a seal between the interface region of the force transfer device and the inside wall of the fluid vessel. Vertical stabilizing elements may extend outward from the force transfer device.

Claims (8)

1. A method for transferring material using a refillable material transfer system comprising:

providing a vessel having a first end with a material inlet and exit manifold and a second end, a force transfer device disposed within the vessel, the force transfer device including, (a) a conical upper portion; (b) a circumferential intermediate portion, and a conical lower portion; the first end of the vessel conforming to a shape of the lower portion of the force transfer device and the second end of the vessel conforming to the shape of the upper portion of the force transfer device, where the conical lower portion is of a different shape from the conical upper portion;

(1) filling the vessel with material using only the material inlet and exit manifold at the first end, thereby pushing the force transfer device against the second end of the vessel; and

(2) driving the force transfer device across the vessel from the second end to the first end to pressurize the material through the material exit manifold, wherein the force transfer device is driven by a drive shaft connected to the force transfer device at the conical upper portion; and

repeating (1) and (2) until a desired amount of material has been transferred.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the driving the force transfer device is accomplished by feeding a high pressure gas to the second end of the vessel.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing a heating coil around a material exit of the vessel, and applying heat to the material only at the material exit of the vessel.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising measuring a level of material in the vessel using a level sensor, and displaying the measured level of material using a level meter.
