Abstract

A system and method for rewarding players of wagering game with a bonus is disclosed. A database is provided for collecting and storing personal interest information from two or more players. The database comprises data fields each representing a category of personal interest information. Groups of common personal information are established. Awarding a bonus award includes selecting a group and determining players currently participating in the wagering game that are in the selected group. At least one player that is currently participating in the wagering game is selected for the bonus award. The selections can be randomly made.

Claims (38)

1. A system comprising:

a database configured to store personal interest information regarding a plurality of players, wherein the personal interest information places each of the plurality of players into one or more player personal interest groups;

an identification element having identification data associated therewith, the identification element used to identify each of the plurality of players participating in a gaming activity; and

one or more computer servers configured to:

(a) select one of the player personal interest groups;

(b) determine an identity of each of a first plurality of the players who are in the selected player personal interest group and who are currently participating in the gaming activity; and

(c) provide bonus award by randomly selecting at least one player from the first plurality of the players who are in the selected player personal interest group and who are currently participating in the gaming activity.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more computer servers randomly select said one of the player personal interest groups.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the bonus award includes an award amount and the one or more computer servers distribute at least a portion of the award amount to the at least one player.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein the one or more computer servers distribute at least a portion of the award amount to at least one other player.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the award amount is distributed in unequal amounts to the at least one player and the at least one other player.

6. The system of claim 4 wherein the at least one other player is randomly selected from the first plurality of the players who are in the selected player personal interest group and who are currently participating in the gaming activity.

7. The system of claim 4 wherein the at least one other player is randomly selected by randomly selecting the at least one player from a second plurality of the players who are in another player personal interest group and who are currently participating in the gaming activity.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the database comprises a plurality of data fields, and wherein each data field represents a category of personal interest information and identification data for players with the personal interest information defined by the data field.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more player personal interest groups include a private group of players.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more computer servers are configured to provide the bonus award in response to a particular game outcome.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more computer servers are configured to provide the bonus award at a random time.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the bonus award is a progressive jackpot.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the bonus award is a mystery jackpot.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the bonus award is a fixed sum of money.

15. A computerized method comprising:

causing at least one processor to execute a plurality of instructions stored in at least one memory device to collect and store personal interest information regarding a plurality of players in a database;

causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to group a first set of the players into a first player personal interest group based on a first personal interest the first set of players have in common;

causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to group a second set of the players into a second player personal interest group based on a second personal interest the second set of players have in common;

causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to establish a bonus award to be awarded to an award winner;

causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to select one of: the first player personal interest group and the second player personal interest group;

causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine determining an identity of each of a first plurality of the players who are in the selected player personal interest group and who are currently participating in a wagering game; and

causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to provide a bonus award by randomly selecting at least one player from the first plurality of the players who are in the selected player personal interest group and who are currently participating in the wagering game.

The computerized method of claim 15 further comprising causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to provide a second bonus award by randomly selecting at least another player from the first plurality of the players who are in the selected player personal interest group and who are currently participating in the wagering game.

17. The computerized method of claim 15 further comprising causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to:

provide a second bonus award by:

randomly selecting another one of the player personal interest groups; and

selecting the at least another player from a second plurality of the players who are in the other player personal interest group.

18. The computerized method of claim 15 , wherein the database comprises a plurality of data fields, and wherein each data field represents a category of personal interest information and player identifier.

19. The computerized method of claim 15 , which includes causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to provide the bonus award to the at least one player at a random time.

20. The computerized method of claim 15 , wherein the bonus award is shared equally among players within a qualifying data field.

21. The computerized method of claim 15 , wherein the bonus award is a progressive jackpot.

22. The computerized method of claim 15 , wherein the bonus award is a mystery jackpot.
