Abstract

One embodiment of a system of the present disclosure can be implemented as follows. A plurality of wall blocks are stacked to form at least a portion of a retaining wall, each wall block having an interior face, an exterior face; a top surface, and a bottom surface. The system further includes retaining means for securing at least one reinforcement member between stacked wall blocks, the retaining means including a pair of reinforcement member retaining bars that are positioned within a slot crossing the transverse length of the top surface of at least one wall block. A first of the retaining means secures the at least one reinforcement member against the bottom of the slot and a second of the retaining means secures the first retaining members against the side of the slot, such that the at least one reinforcement member is additionally secured between the pair of retaining means. Other systems and methods are also provided.

Claims (26)

1. An interlocking retaining wall block, adapted for assembly into a retaining wall including a plurality of stacked rows of at least a plurality of said blocks, said block comprising:

left, right, front and rear body portions, said front and rear body portions of said block being connected by said left and right body portions, defining a void therebetween;

left and right protruding body portions, said left and right protruding body portions extending outwardly in left and right directions from said left and right body portions, respectively, and behind said void;

left and right aligning elements extending upwardly from an upper surface of said left and right protruding body portions, respectively, each of said aligning elements located forward of an exterior face of said rear body portion and rearward of an interior face of said front body portion on each of said left and right protruding body portions, wherein each of said aligning elements is operable to be received by another block void of another one of said blocks, said another block void defined by left, right, front and rear body portions of said another one of said blocks, said front and rear body portions of said another one of said blocks being connected by said left and right body portions, defining said another block void therebetween; and

a substantially planar lower surface of said block.

2. The block of claim 1 , further comprising a second set of left and right protruding body portions, said second set of left and right protruding body portions extending outwardly in left and right directions from said left and right body portions, respectively, and wherein said first and second sets of left and right protruding body portions define side voids of left and right sides of said block, said side voids being generally half the size of said void defined by said left, right, front and rear body portions.

3. The block of claim 1 , further comprising a channel passing between left and right sides of said block for receiving geogrid material and a retainer for said geogrid material.

4. The block of claim 1 , wherein said aligning elements are positioned on said upper surface of said left and right protruding body portions so that an upper row of blocks is horizontally offset in a backward direction from said block.

5. An interlocking retaining wall block, adapted for assembly into a retaining wall including a plurality of stacked rows of at least a plurality of said blocks, said block comprising:

left, right, front and rear body portions, said front and rear body portions of said block being connected by said left and right body portions, defining a void therebetween with left, right, front, and rear interior surfaces;

left and right protruding body portions, said left and right protruding body portions extending outwardly in left and right directions from said left and right body portions, respectively;

left and right aligning elements extending upwardly from an upper surface of said left and right protruding body portions, respectively, each of said aligning elements located forward of an exterior face of said rear body portion and rearward of an interior face of said front body portion on each of said left and right protruding body portions, said left and right aligning elements situated substantially in the plane of said rear interior surface of said void, each of said aligning elements being operable to be received by another block void of another one of said blocks, said another block void defined by left, right, front and rear body portions of said another one of said blocks, said front and rear body portions of said another one of said blocks being connected by said left and right body portions, defining said another block void therebetween; and

a substantially planar lower surface of said block.

6. The block of claim 5 , further comprising a second set of left and right protruding body portions, said second set of left and right protruding body portions extending outwardly in left and right directions from said left and right body portions, respectively, and wherein said first and second sets of left and right protruding body portions define side voids on left and right sides of said block, said side voids being generally half the size of said void defined by said left, right, front and rear body portions.

7. The block of claim 5 , further comprising a channel passing between left and right sides of said block for receiving geogrid material and a retainer for said geogrid material.

8. The block of claim 5 , wherein said aligning elements are positioned on said upper surface of said left and right protruding body portions so that an upper row of blocks is horizontally offset in a backward direction from said block.

9. A retaining wall having at least a first row and a second row resting on top of said first row, each of said rows comprising one or more blocks, each of said blocks comprising:

left, right, front and rear body portions, said front and rear body portions of said block being connected by said left and right body portions, defining a void therebetween;

left and right protruding body portions, said left and right protruding body portions extending outwardly in left and right directions from said left and right body portions, respectively;

left and right aligning elements extending upwardly from an upper surface of said left and right protruding body portions, respectively, each of said aligning elements located forward of an exterior face of said rear body portion and rearward of an interior face of said front body portion on each of said left and right protruding body portions, each of said aligning elements operable to be received by another block void of another one of said blocks, said another block void defined by left, right, front and rear body portions of said another one of said blocks, said front and rear body portions of said another one of said blocks being connected by said left and right body portions, defining said another block void therebetween; and

a substantially planar lower surface of said block;

wherein at least one of said left and right aligning elements of a block in said first row mates with a rear interior surface of said another block void of another block in said second row.

10. The retaining wall of claim 9 , wherein said aligning elements of are positioned so that said second row of blocks are horizontally offset from said first row of blocks.

11. The retaining wall of claim 9 , further comprising one or more columns of filling material passing through said wall from bottom to top through said voids associated with said blocks.

12. The retaining wall of claim 9 , wherein said top surface of each of said blocks further comprises a channel running between left and right sides of said blocks, and wherein one or more substantially horizontal layers of geogrid material are connected to said wall between one or more corresponding rows of blocks by securing each said geogrid material layer in a set of said channels that are aligned in a row with a retaining means inserted into said set of aligned channels.

13. The retaining wall of claim 12 , further comprising an elongate member passing through at least one of said columns and a tie-back rod having one end affixed to soil or rock and another end attached to said elongate member.
