Abstract

An oral device for improving airway patency comprises a tongue constraint and a negative pressure source. The tongue constraint engages the patient's tongue to maintain a clear region below the palate in an oral cavity. By applying a negative pressure in the clear region, an airway behind the soft palate or tongue of the patient can be maintained. The tongue constraint is usually connected to an anchor. The anchor may be held between the patient's teeth or may engage the inferior surface of the palate. Another oral device for improving airway patency comprises a lateral tongue structure and a negative pressure source.

Claims (16)

1. A method for applying a vacuum to an oral cavity of a patient, said method comprising:

placing an oral device in the patient's oral cavity;

applying a negative pressure to a proximal end of a vacuum tube having a distal end coupled to the oral device, wherein a vacuum is established in the oral cavity and liquid collects in the vacuum tube as the negative pressure is applied; and

establishing a continuous flow of air from outside the patient's oral cavity through the vacuum tube from the distal end to the proximal end to continuously move the liquid through the vacuum tube, wherein the vacuum in the oral cavity is maintained while the liquid flows through the vacuum tube.

2. A method as in claim 1 , wherein

applying the negative pressure comprises attaching a vacuum pump to the proximal end of the vacuum tube and operating the pump.

3. A method as in claim 2 , further comprising controlling operation of the pump to maintain a substantially constant vacuum in the oral cavity.

4. A method as in claim 3 , wherein controlling the operation comprises sensing the pressure within the oral cavity and controlling the speed of the pump to maintain the substantially constant pressure.

5. A method as in claim 1 , wherein establishing the continuous flow comprises providing a vent in the vacuum tube to allow air to be drawn into the vacuum tube and to flow toward the proximal end of the vacuum tube.

6. A method as in claim 5 , wherein the vent is in communication with air outside the oral cavity.

7. A method as in claim 6 , wherein the vent is near the distal end of the vacuum tube and lies outside of the oral cavity when the oral device is inside the oral cavity.

8. A method as in claim 1 , further comprising collecting the liquid as it is moved through the vacuum tube.

9. A method as in claim 8 , wherein collecting comprises locating the proximal end of the vacuum tube in a liquid collector in communication with a vacuum source.

10. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the oral device has a tongue constraint which provides a continuous vacuum flow path from the patient's lips to the soft palate, wherein the soft palate forms a seal against one or both of the tongue and the oral device.

11. A method as in claim 10 , wherein the tongue constraint engages a medial surface of the tongue to constrain the medial surface in a position spaced-apart from the hard palate.

12. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the liquid comprises saliva.
